WHAT IS ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND WHO IS AN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH OFFICER/PRACTITIONER?

Environmental health is about understanding the interactions of environmental factors with biological systems. Environmental health can be defined as the interconnections between people and their environment by which human health and a balanced, non-polluted environment are sustained or degraded. Environmental health is focused on the natural and built environments for the benefit of human health.

It can also be defined as a science of human injury and illness prevention as well as well-being advancement. This involves identifying and analyzing environments and hazardous agents while limiting exposures to other hazardous physical, chemical, and biological agents in elements that may affect health.

People who have studied environmental health in Zambia are commonly known as Environmental health officers (EHOs) but in other instances they are referred to as Environmental health practitioners or simply health inspectors and they have a duty to make sure that people’s surroundings are safe, healthy and hygienic.

WHERE DO ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH OFFICERS/PRACTITIONER WORK?

Environmental health professionals are usually employed by the government to advice on and enforce public health standards. However, many are employed in the private sector, the military and other third sector agencies such as charities and NGOs. Mining companies monitor environmental health, local councils monitor environmental health and the ministry of health also monitor environmental health.

WHAT TASKS ARE INVOLVED IN THE WORK?

Environmental health officers are responsible for monitoring and enforcing health and hygiene legislation. They also investigate when there’s an incident, such as pollution, a noise problem, toxic contamination, pest infestation or an outbreak of food poisoning. Monitors and improves public/environmental health standards. Environmental health practitioners play an important role in private industry and in the state sector in ensuring that proper standards are achieved. They do this through advice, education, monitoring and regulation.

Environmental health officers are responsible for monitoring and enforcing standards of environmental and public health, including food hygiene, safety at work, housing and noise and pollution control, preventing environmental health conditions injurious to health and promoting good environmental practices. They are most of the times in the community where they inspect premises, collect evidence from incidents and provide advice.

WHAT IS THE WORK SCHEDULE OF AN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH OFFICER?

The work schedule for EHOs dependent on the organisation, terms of contract as well the work at hand, most EHOs have work schedule ranging from 08hrs to 17hrs from Monday to Friday. Most of their work are done in the field and are very much prone to long working hours as it has been seen during the Covid-19 pandemic.

WHAT DOES THE JOB MARKET LOOK LIKE?

Environmental health is one of the most marketable health professionals in Zambia. The government is the major employer of EHOs but they can also work in industries for large manufacturers, wok for occupational health and health consultancies. EHOs can also work for health related Non-Governmental Organisations such as CHAZ as well as in colleges and universities as lecturers.

WHAT SORT OF CAREER-PERSONALITY MATCH IS REQUIRED?

Being an Environmental health officer does not only require the love for science but also, to a great extent, the love for the people’s wellbeing. It is also important to note that an EHO may not be liked by everyone as he/she is also involved in the enforcement of the law through health public inspections. It from this understanding that an EHO should be able to work long hours in the field, able to work as part of the team, able to explain legislation and procedures to people from all backgrounds, and also able to analyze and solve problems.

WHAT SUBJECTS WILL THE PROGRAM COVER?

The combination of courses is different from various institutions but have a lot in common, from the University Of Zambia you will learn the A level sciences such as biology and chemistry as well as mathematics in the first year and eventually move to more specific courses in the second year such as ecological systems, food and science nutrition, human anatomy and physiology, principals of environmental health. From other institutions you will also learn writing or communication skills in the first year.

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?

It is very important to note that the entry requirements are very much dependent on the institution of interest as well as whether your application is for a diploma or degree program. In Zambia, diploma programs have relatively lower cut-off points as compared to the degree. At institutions such as the University Of Zambia and Copperbelt University, the cut-off points are higher than at other universities for the same program because of stiff competition for few places. In general you need to have 12 points or less in five subjects including Mathematics, Science, and English with two other subjects for a degree and 18 or less for a diploma.

WHAT OTHER PROGRAMS OF STUDY CAN MAKE SOMEONE AN ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH OFFICER?

Unlike other fields in Health Sciences, the path to being an Environmental Health Officer is not only restricted to Environmental Health. You can become an Environmental Health Officer also through the study in Environmental Science and Public Health. There are as well as other social science courses such as the Bachelor of Education in Environmental Education (B.ED.EE) from the University of Zambia, under the school of education that can lead you to becoming an Environmental Health Officer.

WHAT ARE THE FUTURE ADVANCED QUALIFICATIONS AVAILABLE AND WHY?

Environmental Health can be pursued from as low as a college diploma and be seen all the way through to a bachelors degree, masters and let alone a PhD in environmental health. Considering the relationship between Environmental Health and Public Health, you can also advance to masters in Public Health. The masters degree will broaden your chances of getting a job from institutions where a diploma or degree would not get you as it will also help you compete at a global level in as far as job opportunities are concerned. The advancement will further increase the level of salary and benefits that you will be able to attract as it will sharpen your understanding as well as your general skill in the field of study. When you pursue a masters in a different but similar program such as Public Health and Environmental Science, it can help you expand your field of specialty and hence broaden your chances of working with various institutions.

WHAT IS ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING AND WHO IS AN ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEER?

Environmental engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with protecting people from negative environmental effects such as pollution. It is also concerned with the improvement of the quality of the environment. An environmental engineer is someone who is skilled with the science of environmental engineering. These engineers use engineering, soil science, biology and chemistry in order to come up with solutions to the many environmental problems that people face in their day-to-day lives. They work to improve recycling, waste disposal, public health, and water and air pollution control. They are also involved in issues such as climate change and environmental sustainability.

WHERE DO ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERS WORK?

The environmental engineers work in any field, company or organisation that has an environmental department. These include the mines such as Mopani copper mines and other production or processing companies. They also work in the local government for city councils, and also in water and sewerage companies (e.g., Kafubu Water and Nkana Water) in the department of wastewater treatment and waste management. Environmental engineers are also employed by regulatory authorities such as Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA), Water Resources Management Authority (WARMA) and the Zambia Bureau of Standards (ZABS). Other employers include recycling companies and non-governmental organisations that have environmental related projects.

WHAT TASKS ARE INVOLVED IN THE WORK?

There are many tasks that an environmental engineer does at work. They design projects that lead to the protection of the environment. Examples of these projects include air pollution systems and reclamation of water. Reclamation of water is the process of converting household wastewater or industrial wastewater into water that can be reused for a variety of purposes. They monitor the progress of environmental improvement programs. An example of these programs includes the ‘Keep Zambia Clean’ campaign that aimed, among other things, at reducing the incorrect disposal of waste. When they are working for the government, they inspect industrial and other facilities and programs in order to ensure that they are following policies that have to do with protection of the environment. These policies include disposal of waste and wastewater and pollution e.g. air pollution by mines and some industrial companies.

WHAT IS THE WORK SCHEDULE OF AN ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEER?

The typical work schedule of an environmental engineer is from 08:00hrs to 17:00hrs Monday to Friday.

WHAT SORT OF CAREER-PERSONALITY MATCH IS REQUIRED?

An environmental engineer should be an environmentalist at heart, meaning they should be a person who is concerned with and/or advocates for the protection of the environment. This is what environmental engineering is centered around. An interest in mathematics, chemistry, biology and physics will make the study of this program all the more enjoyable.

It is possible to advance the bachelor of engineering in environmental engineering by acquiring a master of philosophy in environmental engineering or a master of science in environmental engineering. Acquiring these higher qualifications allows one to earn a chance of getting employed in some institutions such as environmental regulatory bodies, water regulators, universities and many more. A masters also allows one to be able to lecture at a university.

Electrical engineering is the branch of engineering that is concerned with the practical applications of electricity in many forms including the field of electronics. Electronics engineering is a branch of electrical engineering that deals with the uses of the electromagnetic spectrum and electronic devices such as transistors, capacitors and resistors. We can also define this program as the study, design and application of equipment, machines or devices and systems that use electricity, electronics and electromagnetism. Electrical/Electronic engineers are people who design, develop, test and supervise the manufacturing of electricity and electrical equipment/machines. They also maintain and repair these machines.

The field of electrical engineering has a number of branches and among them is electronics engineering. Other branches include power and energy engineering (generation, transmission and distribution of power), telecommunications engineering, microelectronics and nanoelectronics (dealing with items like microchips), instrumentation engineering (making devices that measure quantities such as temperature or pressure), to name a few.

WHERE DO ELECTRICAL ENGINEERS WORK?

Electrical and electronics engineers work in companies that produce, transmit or distribute electricity such as ZESCO and Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC). They also work in places where electrical and electronic equipment is manufactured. Other work places include factories and plants where the engineers maintain and repair the electrical equipment e.g., mines such as First Quantum Minerals or Konkola Coppers Mines.

WHAT TASKS ARE INVOLVED IN THE WORK?

The tasks that are involved in the work of electrical and electronics engineers depends on where they are work. Generally they design, develop and test electrical devices and equipment. These devices and equipment include power generators, communication systems, navigations systems, and electrical systems for aircrafts and automobiles. They also supervise in the manufacturing of these same devices. In Zambia, they do not manufacture most of these electrical or electronic equipment but the engineers are able to assemble the parts when they arrive in the country.

WHAT IS THE WORK SCHEDULE OF AN ELECTRICAL ENGINEER?

The work schedule of electrical and electronics engineer has the common schedule of 08:00 hrs to 17:00 hrs from Monday to Friday. Sometimes they may work on the weekends and night shifts depending on the company and department of the company they are working from. They can be called at other times apart from these when there is a problem that may need to be fixed e.g. a transformer that has developed a fault.

WHAT DOES THE JOB MARKET LOOK LIKE?

The job market for electrical and electronic engineers is fair as most graduates get jobs within a few months of completing their university stay. This may be because of the wide range of places where they work and the dependence of factories on electricity. Employment can be found in various sectors, although electricity production companies and the mines can be said to be the largest employers in Zambia.

WHAT SORT OF CAREER-PERSONALITY MATCH IS REQUIRED?

Electrical engineering is centred on electricity, the theories around it and how to apply it in many situations. This means that someone who wants to go into this program needs to have a good background and interest in physics, mathematics and chemistry. Because the engineers also do engineering drawing, a background in technical drawing would be an added advantage for this program.

Courses taken during the study of this program include: engineering mathematics, applied computing, engineering measurements and instruments, engineering application and survey, materials science, electrical and electronics principles, engineering design principles, applied mechanics, signals and systems, digital electronics, electrical machines, communication systems, electrical power systems, electrical fields, microprocessors, control systems and management studies. In their first year, students in the degree program will first learn A’ level sciences (mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology).

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?

The minimum entry requirements for this program are 5 O’ level credits (grade 6) or better inclusive Mathematics, Science and English. This programme is very competitive and as such you need to have scored at least 12 points in your best 6 subjects at grade 12 to stand a good chance of being selected.

WHAT OTHER PROGRAMS OF STUDY CAN MAKE SOMEONE AN ELECTRICAL ENGINEER?

There is no other alternative program that can qualify someone to be an electrical engineer.

WHAT ARE THE FUTURE ADVANCED QUALIFICATIONS AVAILABLE AND WHY?

After obtaining a degree, someone can decide to study for a masters or a PhD. The reasons for this is that it allows the engineer to be specialised and be a supervisor in many work places. After these studies, the engineer can do research, develop new electrical equipment or work in places that offer telecommunication services.

WHAT IS ELECTRICAL TECHNOLOGY AND WHO IS AN ELECTRICAL TECHNOLOGIST?

Electrical technology is the study of electricity, electrical equipment and the installation, maintenance and repair of such equipment. In other words you can say that it is the technology of producing, storing, controlling, transmitting and getting work from electricity. In the program, you learn the science behind electricity and how to apply that knowledge in making or repairing electrical equipment, appliances or devices. Examples of these include the torch (flashlight), doorbell, heater, hair dryer etc. An electrical technologist is a person who has studied electricity and electrical equipment and is able to install, maintain and repair these equipment. These people study machines, equipment and systems that conduct or produce electricity.

WHERE DO ELECTRICAL TECHNOLOGISTS WORK?

As an electrical technologist you can work in power generation and distribution companies such as ZESCO or Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) or North Western Energy Corporation (NWEC). Other places where you are likely to be employed include companies that offer electrical solutions and also install equipment such as solar panels and batteries. These companies include Kasuba power solutions, Savenda electrical and hardware Ltd, Ganesh power solutions etc. There are also other companies like Slimline electronics and COPTECH Construction Zambia, that distribute electrical appliances and help install or repair them. As an electrical technologist, you can also open your own repair shop where clients can bring in their electrical or electronic equipment for repairs.

WHAT TASKS ARE INVOLVED IN THE WORK?

The type of tasks that you are expected to do as an electrical technologist depend on where you work. In power generation and distribution companies, you work with electrical engineers in the distribution of electricity to the company’s customers. Specific work done includes installation of transformers, extension of the power grid, connection of buildings to the power grid, and installation of electricity meters among other things. Electrical technologists also carry out installation of the wiring of buildings or factories and join these wires to outlets, transformers and circuit breakers. In addition, they also test wiring and connections to make sure they are working fine. For testing, the electrical technologists use voltmeters, ohmmeters, ammeters and other instruments. For those working in equipment repair, you are expected to replace things such as wires, switches, fuses and circuit breakers and on top of that perform what is called preventive maintenance. Education with sciences is a diploma or degree awarded to students who complete the three or four year course of study in the field of science (major and minor in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics) with major Educational courses.
A person who has studied education with science is called a Science Educator. Education is a profession that complements a range of personality types, though individuals who enjoy sharing their passion for science are ideal candidates. Science educators can major in a particular field such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics.

WHERE DO THEY WORK?
Science educators can work for government secondary schools and private schools as well as mission schools in various parts of the country as teachers. Every year teachers of sciences and mathematics get recruited by the government and they get posted in various teaching centres.

Those with majors in chemistry and biology can also work in food manufacturing and chemical related industries such as Nitrogen Chemicals of Zambia.

Graduates of education with sciences also work in banks and other business sectors. Because most jobs done in the banks are trainable, banks and other companies every year recruit fresh graduates to work as graduate trainees and upon impressing the employers, some graduates get employed permanently. This makes a degree in the field of science a general qualification that can land you a job from any company.

The work schedule or shifts of a graduate in Education with sciences depends on the organisation one is working for. For those that go on to become teachers of mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology either in government or private schools they work half office hours from 07hrs to 13hrs while some knock off according to their class time tables and their lesson plans.
If one is working for a government department or agency, they typically follow the normal 08hrs to 17hrs work schedule Monday to Friday.
If one is working for a bank, banks open at 08hrs and close at 16hrs for customers. After that they continue with the checks and balances behind closed doors until they are done that’s when they knock off.

For those that major in education with mathematics, they have opportunities of working in government departments and agencies like RTSA as statisticians or the Central Statistical Office(CSO).

To enjoy being a teacher in this field, you need to be a person who loves science based subjects. In your first year you will learn these and you need to pass them. For example, In a case where you major in Mathematics in second year you will study courses like linear algebra, Mathematical methods 1, Real Analysis, Introduction to Statistics and Probability combining with any two available educational courses like Education Psychology and Sociology of Education as well as Education Media Technology. In your 3rd year you will have to do courses like group ring theory, statistics, calculus, mathematics teaching methods and research methods. And in your final year you will have to study real analysis II, Mathematics Education project, statistics II, Complex Analysis, mathematics education and education management and administration as a minor course. All students are required to complete both teaching observation and to practice teaching at approved schools in the final year.

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?

At all the institutions the requirements are as follows: Grade 6 or better in English Language, Grade 4 or better in O’ level Mathematics PLUS Grade 6 or better in Biology (or Agricultural Science), Chemistry and Physics OR Grade 6 or better in Science, Biology (or Agricultural Science) and any other acceptable subject. But at UNZA and CBU most science based programs are competitive and entry depends on the levels of competition in the University. Typically, they look for 12points in 5 subjects and which should include Mathematics, Science, and English with three other subjects. These entry requirements may differ from institution to institution and from year to year actually.

WHAT OTHER PROGRAMS OF STUDY CAN MAKE SOMEONE AN EDUCATION SCIENTIST?

Students who enrol for education with sciences go on to become teachers mostly and if you study earth sciences based courses such as geochemistry, or any science like Biochemistry and geophysics can also become education scientists provided that they do the teaching methodology courses, but typically a Zambian education scientist needs to have a degree in science with education. Also, any science that is taught in schools, if combined with teaching methodology, a graduate in any science field can be a teacher.

Economics is the branch of knowledge concerned with the production, consumption and transfer of wealth. It is the study of how scarce resources are allocated to fulfill the infinite wants of consumers.
An Economist is someone who studies the production and distribution of resources, goods, and services. Economists apply economic analysis to issues within a variety of fields, such as education, health, development, and the environment. Some economists study the cost of products, healthcare, or energy. Others examine employment levels, business cycles, or exchange rates. Others analyze the effect of taxes, inflation, or interest rates.

WHERE DO ECONOMISTS WORK?

Being an economist offers opportunities to work with all types of data and a wide variety of companies. As an economist, you may choose to work in a variety of businesses, Banks and industries, including academia. In the government ministries, economists work as planners, but they are mostly recognized as Economists at Ministry of Finance, Commerce and Trade Industries, National Development Planning. They also work for Bank of Zambia (BOZ), Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) and Energy Regulation Board (ERB). They also work as economists for corporate institutions like Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Investment Holding (ZCCM-IH) and industrial Development Corporation Zambia Limited (IDC) as well as non-governmental organisations like the United Nations, World Vision etc.

At the ministry of finance they carry titles such as Economist, budget analyst and principal economist as well as senior economist as the last rank before they start taking positions of managers and senior managers. The same applies at the Ministry of Commerce and Bank of Zambia. At IDC they have titles like Junior Analyst or Senior Analyst. At ZRA they are called Economists, Tax inspectors/ Revenue Inspectors.

WHAT TASKS ARE INVOLVED IN THE WORK?

Economists that work at the Bank of Zambia collect and analyze data about the Zambian economy, including employment, prices, productivity and wages, among other types of data. They also project spending needs and inform policy makers on the economic impact of laws and regulations.

In a commercial bank the Economists are mostly a part of the markets and investment research teams. Financial markets are largely data driven and economic data of any country has a substantial impact on a country’s currency as well as other markets (bond markets, stock market). One of the key roles of the economist in a bank is to analyze all the economic data published from time to time and provide inputs to traders, investors, sales team and others) on the impact the economic data will have on the markets

Economists working for corporations help managers and decision makers understand how the economy will affect their business. Specifically, economists may analyze issues such as consumer demand and sales to help a company maximize its profits.

Economists also work for international organizations, research firms, and think tanks, where they study and analyze a variety of economic issues such as forecasts.

WHAT IS THE WORK SCHEDULE OF AN ECONOMIST?
The work schedule of an economist is influenced by many factors, but most economists work independently in an office on full-time. In addition to working full time at a business or ministry some economists do consult part-time.

For the Economists in banks their work require overtime hours. Banks open at 8am and close at 4pm only for customers, but there is a lot of work to do behind closed doors that make them knock off at 8pm.

At government ministries, corporations and other companies, economists work full time during regular business hours normal hours from 8am to 5pm. For economists that work for consultancy firms and NGOs as Survey Researchers and Market Research Analysts occasionally work overtime to meet deadlines.

The biggest employing sector for economists is the Government because every ministry needs economists as Economists, investment officers, budget analysts as well as planners.

The financial sector such as the Back of Zambia, Commercial banks as well as non-financial sectors like insurance companies are the second largest employers of economists in Zambia. The corporation and Non-governmental organisations are another employer of economists.

In general, job opportunities for Economists are plenty and good. But Job prospects are best for those with a master’s degree or Ph.D. because they poses strong analytical skills, and experience using statistical analysis software. Most economists need a master’s degree or Ph.D. However, some entry-level jobs primarily in government are available for workers with a bachelor’s degree.

Pursuing a career in early childhood education in Zambia can lead you to work in various types of workplaces. Commonly, early childhood educators will work within a school setting but can work from care centers or private residences. Listed below are potential workplaces for early childhood education professionals:  government schools, private Schools, Special Education schools, Kindergarten Centers and Daycare centers. (Daycare center is a place where people who cannot be fully independent such us small children can be taken care of. In Zambia we have them in form of nursery schools).

WHAT TASKS ARE INVOLVED IN THE WORK?

Every school and daycare center has its own specific rules and regulations, but early childhood educators are expected to perform the following common tasks:

Create Lesson Plans, Early childhood educators design their own lesson and classroom instruction plans based on state-approved and school-approved curriculum. Lead Daily Activities, Early childhood educators lead daily social, learning, and physical activities for all children in their assigned classes. Monitor Children, Early childhood educators are responsible for the overall health and welfare of the children in their classroom, which requires diligent monitoring of all children during learning times, meal times, restroom breaks, and nap times.

Encourage and Engage Children, as an early childhood educator, it is necessary to keep all children active and engaged while they are in the classroom. They are ultimately responsible for keeping the classroom clean, organized, and stimulating for children.

Assess In-Class and Homework Assignments, Early childhood educators must assess all work submitted by students and provide progress reports to parents detailing their child’s success completing classroom work. Attend Staff Meetings, Early childhood educators must attend mandatory workshops, conferences, and staff meetings as directed by school guidelines.

WHAT IS THE WORK SCHEDULE OF AN EARLY CHILDHOOD TEACHER?

If one is working for a government or private school they typically follow the normal 08hrs to 16hrs work schedule Monday to Friday. They report for work at 08hrs and have a mid-morning break at 10hrs and break off for lunch at 12hrs. The day ends at 16hrs and 17hrs latest on certain occasions.

WHAT DOES THE JOB MARKET LOOK LIKE?

Early childhood education describes the period of learning that takes place from birth to 8 years old. There are many career paths you can take, including teaching, managing a daycare, and providing in-home care for children.

An early childhood educator can find a job as a Preschool Teacher: Preschool teachers introduce young children to education and prepare them for kindergarten. They also look for signs of emotional or developmental issues and bring them to the attention of parents or guardians. The early childhood teacher job description can vary between childcare centers.

They also find jobs as Kindergarten School Teachers: Kindergarten school teachers create lesson plans for math, English, social studies and science, but also to teach pupils the soft skills they need to be successful in school. They communicate with parents about their child’s progress and prepare students to take standardized tests. They also find jobs as Childcare Center Directors or principals: The director/principal of the childcare center oversees all of the preschool teachers and childcare workers. They are responsible for hiring and training staff, planning the budget, developing the educational standards and programming for the center, and meeting with parents to discuss students’ progress.

They also find jobs as School Counselors or Psychologists: Working in schools, counselors and psychologists can diagnose learning disabilities or cognitive, emotional or behavioral problems in young students. Together with parents, the counselors and psychologists can design and implement behavior modification programs for students.

Development Studies is an interdisciplinary field of study whose mission is to provide graduates with skills in high quality teaching, research and consultancy and public service in different aspects of human development. After studying development studies, you will gain cultural understanding, analytical skills and research capabilities.
A person who has studied development studies is called a development analyst or Development Specialist. A development analyst/specialist is someone who has obtained a degree and is prepared for critical thinking on complex and multidimensional issues and problems affecting human society.

WHERE DO DEVELOPMENT ANALYSITS/SPECIALIST WORK?

The labour market in Zambia has come to recognize and appreciate the expertise possessed by Development Studies graduates as essential to effectively pursue political, economic and social development in Zambia. Many of the graduates of development studies have been traditionally absorbed as key players in various government ministries where they work as Administrative and Assistant Administrative Officers. At the Ministry of Health they work as Public Health Officers, at departments like Disaster Management & Mitigation Unit (DMMU) they work as Urban and Regional Planning officers, at Department of Immigration as Immigration Officers, and now increasingly they work at Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and the private sector, including banks.

WHAT TASKS ARE INVOLVED IN THE WORK?

Mostly in the NGOs and other international organisations like NIRAZ Zambia, USAID, John Snow Health etc., they work as Monitoring and Evaluation Officers and Project Officers .Because a lot of projects that NGOs do in Zambia generate a lot of data, they also work as Data Entry Clerks as well. This means their work involves a lot of travel out in the fields where projects are done for data collection, monitoring, evaluation etc.

Consultancy is also one of the most common career paths for graduates with a degree in Development Studies in Zambia. Consultants cooperate with various social and charitable organizations that carry out projects dedicated to improving the health of individuals and communities throughout Zambia. They do various tasks like conducting the Climate Risk Assessment in various fields, assessing impact of climate change on water availability and crop and milk production and identifies the risk that climate change poses to each of the stakeholders’ business in the value chain.

As immigration officers they do surveillance operations, collecting statistics, report writing, and organising for people to be sent back to their country of origin if they’re not entitled to be in the Zambia.

In Government mostly they are involved in administrative works as well as planning. In the banks they are mostly employed as bank tellers, loan officers and credit officers at entry level because mostly the kind of work done in the bank is job on training. With experience, they can be promoted to higher level positions within the bank. The work of a development specialist involve usage of computer applications like excel, and SPSS for statistical analysis.

WHAT IS THE WORK SCHEDULE OF A DEVELOPMENT ANALYSIT/SPECIALIST?

The work schedule or shifts of a development specialist depends on the organisation one is working for. If one is working for a government department, they typically follow the normal 08hrs to 17hrs work schedule Monday to Friday. If one is working for a consultancy firm or NGOs they usually go out in the fields because they are in the fore front conducting Monitoring and Evaluation Surveys, data collection and entry, especially Bachelor’s degree holders. In the fields they can spend a few days to weeks before they return to a town office to analyse the data they collect.

WHAT DOES THE JOB MARKET LOOK LIKE?

The biggest employer of Development Studies graduates are the NGOs. A Development Specialist can find a job at an NGO. NGOs continue to look for more graduates of development studies with an understanding of Social, Economic and political problems of most Zambian communities. Therefore, the NGO can have a Development Specialist working at the office and working as a Monitoring and Evaluation Officer or Project Officer out in the fields. The chances are also higher that one will find a job with International

Organisations like the International Labour Organisation(ILO) that come in to look for development specialists. The banking sector is also another employer of development studies specialists ,but mostly at entry levels only as credit officers, loan officers as well as bank tellers. The government is another employer in its various departments such as the immigration department and ministry of health.

The job market for Development Studies graduates depends on the number of or organisations coming on board, be it NGOs, Charitable Organizations, international organizations. The more these organizations become, the more job prospects become for Development Studies graduates.

To enjoy being a development specialist, you need to be a person who loves doing community and charitable works. In your first year you will learn why Zambia is less developed and why there is poverty and the need to eradicate it. At the University of Zambia when one enrols into university to study Development studies, they belong to the category of Bachelor of Arts non quarter. And they can combine introduction to Development studies with any other three social science subjects from various departments like economics, political science, sociology etc. At second year they become development studies majors and they take on three intermediate development studies courses from the department of development studies and combine with any one of the three subjects they were taking at first year as a minor.

At ZCAS University the development studies is direct entry at first year and they combine the introduction to development studies with any other three subjects in line with development studies.

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?

At the University of Zambia, they look for 6 (credit) or better in five subject including maths and English and any other three social science subjects but because of competition every year the cut-off point is set around 8 points for boys and 10 points for girls.
At ZCAS University they consider 6 or better in 5 subjects including maths and English and any other 3 social sciences.

WHAT OTHER PROGRAMS OF STUDY CAN MAKE SOMEONE A DEVELOPMENT ANALYST?

To work as a Development Specialist, there is only Economics as an alternative qualification. Because there is a field called development economics at master’s degree level in Economics.

WHAT ARE THE FUTURE ADVANCED QUALIFICATIONS AVAILABLE AND WHY?

Graduates in Development Studies can also continue education in other fields – usually all study programs in social sciences at a post graduate level welcome student with a Bachelor degree in Development Studies. Programs like Master of Economics, Master of Public Health or even Master of Business Administration.

Many graduates with a bachelor degree in Development Studies continue their education and receive a Master and PhD degree in order to start their research practice in higher educational or research institutions. They can also become professors in their area or become lecturers of Social Sciences and Development Studies after completing their Master’s Degree.

WHAT IS DENTISTRY (DENTAL SURGERY) AND WHO IS A DENTIST?

Dentistry, also called dental surgery, is the branch of medicine concerned with the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases of the oral cavity, commonly involving the teeth and gums but also in the surrounding structures such as the jaws, tongue and salivary glands. A dentist is a doctor of oral health who has earned at least a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degree or it’s equivalent.

WHERE DO DENTISTS WORK?

A dentist can work in a privately owned dental clinic or in the dental department of a government or private hospital. Here, they may work independently or may head a dental care team composed of a dental therapist, dental technologist and dental assistant.

A dentist could also work with non-governmental organisations that support oral health and wellness, tackling problems such as cleft lip and palate. Examples of these are CURE Zambia, Smile train and Smiles and Hopes Zambia.

A dentist could also go into biomedical research and work with institutions such as the tropical diseases research centre (TDRC), which researches ways to prevent and treat diseases.

WHAT TASKS ARE INVOLVED IN THE WORK?

A typical day for a dentist in general practice will involve examining patients reporting to the dental clinic, diagnosing oral disease and formulating a treatment plan to restore or maintain oral health. They may perform tasks such as preparing and placing fillings, tooth extractions, professional cleaning, inserting braces, dentures or prostheses, and root canal therapy. Dentists may prescribe medications such as antibiotics, pain killers, sedatives and any other medications useful in patient management. The work and expertise of dentists are broad and involves much more than these common dental procedures. Examples of more advanced procedures that dentists perform include the removal of tumors affecting the jaw and repair of facial fractures in accident victims.

Dentists make use of equipment such as drills, probes, forceps, mouth mirrors and x-ray machines to aid in their work. Dentists’ training enables them to recognise situations that require referral of patients to dental specialists or even to physicians.

WHAT IS THE WORK SCHEDULE OF A DENTIST?

Dental clinics are usually open from 08:00 hours to 17:00 hours during the week and are closed on the weekends and holidays. In a hospital setting, dentists may be required to work over the weekends or during the night when on-call.

WHAT DOES THE JOB MARKET LOOK LIKE?

After graduation from dental school and obtaining a provisional license from the health professionals council of Zambia (HPCZ), a graduate must undergo a mandatory period of internship working under the supervision of a team of dentists, before obtaining full registration as a licensed dental practitioner. Zambian government policy is that such internship be only offered at government hospitals having dental consultants. As such, government is the major employer of new dental school graduates as interns. When fully registered and licensed as a dental practitioner, a dentist may also work elsewhere. This may be in private dental clinics, private hospitals, mine hospitals, or with NGOs.

There is a critical shortage of dentists in Zambia, with training dentists locally beginning only in 2011. This entails that there is a high demand for dentists and as such, employment opportunities are many.

WHAT SORT OF CAREER-PERSONALITY MATCH IS REQUIRED?

Dentistry as a program of study is very demanding. The program assumes that a student has a good background in science. It is therefore important for someone to have an interest and aptitude for science-based subjects especially biology, chemistry and physics. A career in dentistry requires someone to have good communication skills, patience, compassion and empathy. All of these are important because dentistry involves working with people, usually children and patients who fear dental work. It is especially important for dentists to have good manual dexterity (working with their hands). This is because dentists work with tools which they have to manoeuvre in a limited space. A good business sense and leadership skills may also come in handy as most dentists own their own practices.

The level of education and clinical practice required to earn a dental degree are on par with those required for a medical degree. Courses covered in the first 3 years of dental and medical training are essentially the same. Upon entry into university, students will cover A’ level natural sciences (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology) in the first 1 or 2 years. The next 2 years focus on Basic Science courses which include Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Microbiology, Biochemistry and others. The coursework in the last 3 years focuses on the practical training of being a dentist and covers courses such as Oral Medicine, Oral Surgery, Operative Dentistry, Orthodontics, Endodontics and Periodontics.

In the United States and countries following their system, an equivalent dental degree is awarded as Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DDM). Apart from these, diplomas in dental therapy and dental technology are on offer at Levy Mwanawasa Medical University. These qualifications do not themselves qualify the holder to be a dentist. Depending on the setting and due to the major shortage of dentists in Zambia, dental therapists and technologists carry out many of the roles of a dentist in many Zambian hospitals.

WHAT IS DEMOGRAPHY AND WHO IS A DEMOGRAPHER?

Demography is the study of human populations, this includes: population size, population composition and population distribution across geographical areas or spaces. Demography is also the process through which populations change. Births, deaths and migration are the ‘big three’ concerns of demography, they jointly produce population stability or change.

A population’s composition may be described in terms of age, sex, family and household status, language, education, occupation, ethnicity, religion, income and wealth. The distribution of populations can be defined at multiple levels (local, regional, national, global) and with different types of boundaries (political, economic, and geographic). Demography is a central component of societal contexts and social change.

A demographer is someone who has studied and graduated with a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree from a well-known university.

WHERE DO DEMOGRAPHERS WORK?

Demographers work for ministry of health as Data Management and Analysis Specialists where they  effectively provide site level data quality control measures, identify problems and provide feedback to program and facility staff. They also work for Zambia Statistics Agency formerly known as Central Statistical Office (CSO) where they Lead the data analysis efforts and provide feedback to the program teams and facilities,

They also work for ministry of planning and infrastructure where they oversee data collection, collation, storage, analysis, and reporting, ensuring that data is of high quality and audit worthy. They also work in most NGOs where they mostly work closely with partners to establish their internal MERL systems (this is a software for data analysis), Monitoring & Evaluation plans and data quality management.

Demographers also work for private firms such as banks and public agencies at local, regional, national and international levels.

WHAT TASKS ARE INVOLVED IN THE WORK?

Demography is very useful for understanding social and economic problems and identifying potential solutions. Demographers are engaged in social planning, market research, insurance forecasting, labor market analysis, economic development and so on. What demographers do goes well beyond this broad definition and draws extensively from related disciplines such as Sociology, Economics, statistics, Political Science and Public Health

Their general tasks wherever they work include: interpret data and communicate results to their clients, often with the aid of mathematical techniques and software. In this role you’ll ensure that complex statistical concepts are explained in a way the client can understand, and advice on strategy.

consulting with clients and agreeing what data to collect and how it should be gathered taking into account any ethical and legislative considerations, designing experiments, trials or surveys to produce the required data, collecting and analysing the data, interpreting the data and making sure that the right decisions are made based on the results, monitoring data collected throughout its shelf life, presenting results to others, such as senior managers, regulatory authorities and clients, advising policymakers on key decisions based on results, carrying out research, often as part of a team, writing reports and articles for publication. Oversee the development and maintenance of a comprehensive project database, ensure accurate and timely storage of electronic files.

Develop and implement market intervention strategies for target markets in global health to inform decisions of governments, donors and other stakeholders. Clean data and produce visualizations, summary statistics and reports. Engage donors and financiers including development banks to develop plans that alleviate constraints of suppliers etc.

WHAT IS THE WORK SCHEDULE OF A DEMOGRAPHER?

The work schedule of a Demographer is influenced by many factors but most Demographers work independently in an office on full-time during regular business hours from 8am to 5pm. In addition to working full time at an Organization or ministry some Demographers do consult part-time. Demographers that work for consultancy firms and NGOs occasionally work overtime to meet deadlines.

WHAT DOES THE JOB MARKET LOOK LIKE?

Job opportunities are widely available in Zambia for Demographers mostly in the health sector or pharmaceutical industry. For example, the pharmaceutical industry provides opportunities that will make you travel abroad to discuss the design of trials, collect data, discuss results and meet with regulatory authorities. Medical demographers may travel abroad to present findings at conferences.

Contract research organisations (CROs) also offer jobs for demographers, public sector research organisations (such as the Zambia Demographic survey) also employs demographers, regulatory authorities, market research companies, manufacturing and service companies, investment companies and banks, insurance companies, the National Health Service they also employ Demographers.

Job titles may vary depending on the area of work, for example Demographers are also known as data analysts, data managers, mathematical modelers, Data Management and Analysis Specialists and so on.

WHAT SORT OF CAREER-PERSONALITY MATCH IS REQUIRED?

To enjoy Demography both at school and work you need to have strong ability to extract, analyse, model and interpret data. You also need to have proficiency in statistical packages such as SPSS, STATA, SAS etc, you will learn about these software in school. You must also have high level of confidentiality and Integrity, accuracy and attention to detail.  You should also be someone who is trustworthy and honest. Working as Demographer means dealing with data and helping to find practical solutions to problems. If you’re keen on numbers, skilled in Information Technology and like compiling information, this could be the program for you.

WHAT SUBJECTS WILL THE PROGRAM COVER?

At the University of Zambia at first year no one enrols to study demography as a direct entry. They are all in the category of Bachelor of Arts non-quota. They will do a course combination that includes introduction to Demography and mathematics for social sciences as pre requisites for Demography combined with any two social science courses like micro and macroeconomics, Development, public Admiration and a cut-off point is set for one to major in Demography at second year. At second year they become Demography majors after successfully passing and meeting the cut off points. At second year they do three demography courses such as population composition, change and theory, research and statistical methods and sources and measures of demographic data as well as taking up one minor course. At third year they again do three demography courses like population and development, methods of demographic data evaluation and computer application in demography as well as one minor course and at fourth year they do three demography courses like advanced techniques of demographic analysis, research project in demography and monitoring and evaluation as well as one minor course.

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?

Entry depends on the levels of competition in the University. Typically, they look for 8 points in 5 subjects and below which should include Mathematics, English and any three social Science subjects. This may change from year to year, inquire from the university you are interested in.

WHAT OTHER PROGRAMS OF STUDY CAN MAKE SOMEONE A DEMOGRAPHER?

To work as a Demographer, you can also have a degree in Mathematics, Statistics and Economics as well as Business Administration as alternative programs because they all deal with quantitative research analysis. But mostly even programs that are qualitative in nature such as psychology, Public Administration, Public Health and Sociology are all considered as alternative programs for Demography.

WHAT ARE THE FUTURE ADVANCED QUALIFICATIONS AVAILABLE AND WHY?

Once you study Demography, you may decide to pursue a master’s degree in Demography (master of art with Demography), Master of art with Economics, Public Health Developments studies and so on. A master’s degree or Ph.D. is required for some Demography jobs. An advanced degree is sometimes required for advancement to higher level positions.

The reasons you need to advance your career in Demography are that, many organisations employ Demographers in small numbers, which means that opportunities for internal promotion may be limited and you will qualify when such opportunities come after career advancement. It’s also usually possible to switch between the different sectors after career advancement. Larger companies usually have a promotion structure that allows for advancement into more senior management positions. There are many career options and opportunities for diversification or specialisation at a later stage. With a masters or PhD, prospects exist in research and teaching i.e. one with a master’s degree can become a lecturer at the university. Other Demographers move into related areas such as project management and so on.
