The most important subjects you need to have is English and Maths and any best four subjects. The points do not matter.

To work as a hospitality person, there are alternatives depending on the type of position one needs to take up in the hospitality industry. If someone has a grade 12 certificate with English and Maths including any other subject, they can become a hospitality person at the grassroots position.

WHAT IS HEAVY EQUIPMENT REPAIR AND WHO IS A HEAVY EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN?

This program is also known as heavy-duty equipment mechanics. It is a branch of mechanics that specialises in working with heavy machinery used in construction, farming, and railway transport. They work with big engines, inspecting, servicing and repairing any damage to the engine or vehicle. It is similar to automotive mechanics in many ways, the major difference in these two fields is that in heavy equipment repair the mechanic deals with very big machines with big engines while an auto mechanic only looks at small vehicles. A person who therefore is skilled in heavy equipment repair can be called a heavy equipment technician or mechanic.

WHERE DO HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANICS WORK?

Heavy equipment mechanics work in places where you find heavy equipment. Heavy equipment can be defined as heavy duty vehicles which are designed for doing construction tasks especially work that involves moving very heavy things such as rocks. Examples of these heavy machines include cranes, graders and bulldozers. Therefore, heavy equipment mechanics work in places with heavy equipment dealers, servicing companies and companies that own and operate heavy equipment. The places that make use of these machines include mines, railway systems and companies, commercial farms, construction companies etc., and this is where you find jobs for heavy equipment mechanics.

WHAT TASKS ARE INVOLVED IN THE WORK?

The tasks involved at work include the inspection of the machines so that they perform well and also to inspect for machines that may have problems. They investigate and look for the problems using testing equipment to determine the problem and how big the problem is. After finding the problem, they make adjustments to the machine and repair or replace parts, components or the whole system using hand or power tools. They also test the machines to ensure that they have been fixed well. They clean, lubricate and perform maintenance of the equipment especially on the engine and other moving parts such as the moving part of a crane.

WHAT IS THE WORK SCHEDULE OF A HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC?

The work schedule of a mechanic depends on where they work. Some companies may want to have a mechanic in the night because the company may operate in the night. But generally, there are no shifts in this job and the mechanics are usually called in if something goes wrong with the machines.

WHAT DOES THE JOB MARKET LOOK LIKE?

As stated above, the heavy equipment mechanics work in places where you can find the heavy machines working. In our case, the mines e.g. Kalumbila and Mopani copper mines and First Quantum minerals and small scale mining companies form part of the job market. Companies that have these machines (mobile cranes, self-loading trucks and forklifts etc.) for hire such as ECSTAL plant hire and Kings heavy machinery also employ them. The mechanics are also employed in commercial farms where their services are needed for the maintenance and repair of farm heavy machinery. The government through the city councils that have these machines such as graders also employs heavy equipment mechanics.

WHAT SORT OF CAREER-PERSONALITY MATCH IS REQUIRED?

The job of a heavy equipment mechanic is hands on and therefore on needs to be comfortable with working with their hands. One needs to have interest in physics, mathematics and technical drawing for the schooling in this program to be even more interesting and easier.

The entry requirements for heavy equipment repair at diploma, technician and craft level are a full grade 12 certificate with five ‘O’ level credits in subjects including Mathematics, English, Science. Entry requirements at the Trade-test level is a grade 9 or grade 7 certificate.

One has to study heavy equipment repair for them to be a heavy equipment mechanic or technician. But, an automotive mechanic can be skilled in a particular part of the heavy machines so that they have multiple skills that increase the chances of being employed. These courses are called bridging courses and one does a 6 months course (like at Northern Technical College, NORTEC) in a specific area like heavy duty engines, earth moving equipment braking systems, earth moving equipment transmission system. This bridging course requires that one has a certificate in automotive mechanics.

Further studies in this program are available in other countries but at the time of compiling this, there is no school in Zambia that offers a degree or a masters programs specifically for heavy equipment repair.

WHAT IS GEOMATICS AND WHO IS A GEOMATIC ENGINEER?

If asked to define what geomatics or geoinformatics is, we could say it is a program that studies the methods and technologies that are used to collect, distribute, store, analyse, process and present geographic data. It can also be defined as the science and technology of gathering, analysing, interpreting and distributing spatial information. This program includes geodesy (measuring the shape, position in space and gravity of the earth and the changes of these with time), geographic information systems, global positioning systems, hydrography (making charts of water bodies such as lakes and rivers), mapping, photogrammetry (making measurements of the earth using photographs) and surveying. From this it is clear that this program teaches how to survey the whole or part of the earth using a number of techniques such as satellites, drones etc.

This program is of great importance because it allows us to have information about the earth and its natural resources such as rivers, lakes, minerals etc. This information is then used to make very important decisions such as whether a mine should be started in a particular area. We can therefore say that a geomatics engineer is a person who has the knowledge and skills to collect, analyse and interpret geographical information. This geographical information includes information like the landscape, streams, rivers, different kinds of vegetation and soil and man-made things such as factories and electric power lines.

WHERE DO GEOMATIC ENGINEERS WORK?

Geomatics engineers are employed in different places and sectors of the country. They are employed by the city council for a wide range of works which include helping with measuring boundaries and placing beacons for these boundaries. They are also employed by the ministry of lands for the same reasons as for the city council but here they are involved with a particular district, province or the whole country. They are also employed by water and sewerage companies for the purpose of hydrography which we defined as making charts of water bodies. Mines make use of their skills to help in the mining processes as they work with other types of engineers. Power companies such as ZESCO and network service providers e.g. Zamtel and MTN also employ these engineers.

WHAT TASKS ARE INVOLVED IN THE WORK?

The tasks the geomatics engineers will do is dependent on where they are working from. In the mines they provide accurate information to all other engineers about the how much area and volume of land has been mined and they also make precise maps of the surface and underground to show the situation and the progress of the mining plans. In the water and sewerage companies they help to locate and map the water bodies and how these can be accessed so that they can be used to provide water to people of a particular town. In the city councils and ministry of lands they may provide information about the land by making maps of different types. Some of these maps for example can be about the vegetation to show the effects of deforestation.

WHAT IS THE WORK SCHEDULE OF A GEOMATICS ENGINEER?

The work schedule for these geomatics engineers differs depending on where one works. But it should be known that a part of these engineers decide to work mostly on computers while the others work outdoors. Those that work in the offices work in the usual office hours that span from 8 to 17 hours, mostly Monday to Friday. Those that go outdoors to survey have no definite schedule. In those times, for example, when a new mine has to be made, they can be gone for some weeks to map the area before any mining works start.

WHAT DOES THE JOB MARKET LOOK LIKE?

The field of geomatics is relatively new in the country and some of the technology that is used in the field is quite new and only being introduced for use in our country. Many companies especially those that reach out to the whole country would like to map out their services. Mining being a major contributor of our economy allows most of these engineers to be employed in the mining industry. The job market is fair and it is increasing because technology like GPS are being used a lot as the world and the country also develops.

WHAT SORT OF CAREER-PERSONALITY MATCH IS REQUIRED?

The personality that goes well with this program is an outgoing and outdoors person. This is because the job is mostly about surveying the land. Although, even an indoors computer person can enjoy the work because some of these engineers work with computers that have been fed with information from satellites or drones. You need to have an interest in Mathematics, physics, chemistry and geography in order to enjoy studying this program.

To advance your qualifications, you can study for a master’s in geoinformation, geodesy, mining surveying or other related fields. A master’s and other higher qualifications allows you to specialise in one particular field and increases your chances of getting a job especially in large companies. These opportunities are greater because, for example, the mines would rather employ a geomatics engineer with a master’s that concentrated on mining surveying than employ one with just a degree and therefore only a limited amount of knowledge in mining surveying. The other reason is that the masters allows the person to work for a university in the capacity of a lecturer in geomatics/geoinformatics.

WHAT IS GEOLOGY AND WHO IS A GEOLOGIST?

A geologist is a person who studied geology in university. Geology is the study of the earth materials such as soils, rocks, water, petroleum and minerals and processes under which they were formed. When geologists understand these processes under which the materials were formed, they use that knowledge to locate new mineral deposits or new water resources or petroleum that are useful in the economy of countries. Minerals provide sources of metals for industrialisation while water is an input in domestic homes and all forms of industries and agriculture.

WHERE DO GEOLOGISTS WORK?

Geologists can work for the department of water affairs for the government where they explore for new sources of water, typically ground water. Also, non-governmental organisations like the world Vision or SNV can employ geologists to help them locate good sources of ground water that they can access using boreholes typically in rural areas for rural communities to use. A geologist who specialises in water exploration is called a hydrogeologist.

A geologist can also work as a mineral exploration geologist for a mineral exploration company or for the geological survey department of the government to look for new mineral deposits. Mineral exploration companies are typically foreign private companies who come into the country to make mining investments. Once new profitable mineral deposits have been discovered, a mine such as that of Copper on the Copperbelt province is opened. At the mine site, a geologist continues to direct the mining company in terms of the quality of the mineral at each stage of the mining process. At the mine site, a geologist also helps to locate ground water and pump it out so that mining activities are not disturbed by flooding of water.

WHAT TASKS ARE INVOLVED IN THE WORK?

For the geologist who works in water exploration (hydrogeologist), their day to day job involves going out in the field with special equipment called geophysical equipment that is used to take measurements of specific factors on the ground. From those measurements a hydrogeologist will sit on the computer to use a computer software that will help the geologist interpret those readings to be able to know if there is water below the ground and at what depth and what the volume of the water is. Then boreholes can be drilled to confirm the presence of that water and borehole pumps are installed for people to access that water.

For the geologist who works in mineral exploration, it involves going out in the field in remote areas to stay there for a few weeks typically. This is because areas where mineral exploration occurs are typically remote. In the field, a geologist will collect soil samples and rock samples that are taken to the laboratory for chemical analysis to determine if the soil or rocks have minerals in them. If the soils and rocks show signs of minerals in them, the geologist will drill into the ground using drilling machines and bring out rocks from depths as deep as 1000m below ground in a systematic pattern to define the size and quality of the mineral deposit. A mineral exploration geologist also uses geophysical machines like the ones a hydrogeologist uses to measure factors in the ground that could indicate the potential of minerals even before drilling into the ground is done.

WHAT IS THE WORK SCHEDULE OF A GEOLOGIST?

The work schedule or shifts of a geologist depends on the organisation one is working for. If one is working for a government department, they typically follow the normal 08hrs to 17hrs work schedule Monday to Friday. If one is working for a mining company, some mines work 08hrs to 17hrs while others have some geologists who have to work in the night shifts to monitor the quality of the mineral deposit being mined in the night. A mineral exploration geologist goes away from home for about 4weeks to 8weeks and returns home for a break of about 2weeks to 4weeks and repeats the process. This is so because they work in remote areas sometimes with no proper communication back home, depending on the company one is working for if they cant afford to buy satellite phones or satellite internet.

WHAT DOES THE JOB MARKET LOOK LIKE?

The job market for geologists lies in four areas and the chances of finding a job is explained in order of highest probability as follows. A geologist can find a job in a mining company, some mining companies continue to look for more minerals around the mine area. Therefore, the mine can have geologists working at the mine and working as mineral exploration geologists around the same mine. The chances are higher that one will find a job in the mine. Some companies are just mineral exploration companies before they can find a mineral deposit, therefore a geologist can find a job here as well. There isn’t a very good number of exploration companies, many of them explore for about 5 years, and if they don’t find anything to mine they close or move to another country and carry some of their geologists from Zambia. The government is another employer in its various departments such as the geological survey department or water affairs department or ZCCM-IH. Non-governmental organisations are another employer as discussed earlier.

The job market in the mining industry is sort of a see-saw, when the metal prices are doing well mining companies want to mine more and invest in exploring for more mineral deposits and when metal prices are low, they reduce labour and jobs are hard to find. It goes in those cycles. Typically, its not a very stable industry, but its worth the risk though.

WHAT SORT OF CAREER-PERSONALITY MATCH IS REQUIRED?

To enjoy being a geologist, you need to be a person who loves science based subjects. In your first year you will learn these and you need to pass them. After graduation, to enjoy work, you need to be a person who loves investigative science because geologists go out to collect data to interpret and make a judgement whether there is water or minerals below the ground. All that needs some good analytical skills and an interest in learning how to use computer software. Not to design software, but just to learn how to use them. You learn them on the job not really in school.

To work as a geologist, there is no alternative qualification apart from earth sciences based qualification such as geochemistry or geophysics, but typically a Zambian geologist needs to have a degree in geology.

Once you study geology, you may decide to pursue a master’s degree in Exploration Geology, or Geophysics or Geochemistry or Business Administration or Mineral Resources Estimation or Hydrogeology. A master’s degree gives you a upper hand when it comes to finding new jobs in competitive environments especially abroad. It’s a sign that apart from general skills, you have taken keen interest to master one area of your job more than other people. With a master’s degree one would become a university lecturer as well

WHAT IS FORESTRY AND WHO IS A FORESTER?

Simple definition of a forester is any person who has studied Forestry from a university. Therefore, Forestry is a natural science that involves the expertise of crafting, management, utilization, conserving, and repairing forests, woodlands, and related resources for human and environmental benefits. Forestry is practiced in plantations and natural stands. The study of forestry has segments that have a place with the biological, physical, social, political and managerial sciences.

WHERE DO FORESTERS WORK?

In Zambia, the major employer of foresters is the government under Forestry Department, Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW, formerly ZAWA), Department of Environmental Protection, Natural Resources Department, National Heritage Commission and the Department of Climate Change. In addition to the mainstream government departments, most foresters are employed by the parastatal Zambia Forests and Forestry Industry Corporation (ZAFFICO). Several other potential employers of foresters include non-governmental organizations such as SNV, World Vision, World Wild Fund for Nature (WWF), Zambia Community Based Natural Resources Management (CBNRM) Forum, Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), amongst several other organizations which deal in forestry and other natural resources related programmes. Learning institutions too such as Zambia Forestry College, Mulungushi University and the Copperbelt University do hire foresters.

Private companies such as the Copperbelt Forestry Company, Sikale Wood, Wood Processing Industries and many others that are in the value addition of timber business make up the long list of employers of foresters in Zambia. Consultancy firms too add to the list.

WHAT TASKS ARE INVOLVED IN THE WORK?

The forestry profession involves a wide range of tasks, with different educational requirements of either college diplomas, bachelor’s degrees, MScs and/or PhDs for highly specialized work. Industrial foresters strategize forest regeneration as well as sustainable harvesting. Urban foresters take care of trees and other vegetation in urban green spaces and parks. Foresters work in tree nurseries raising seedlings for woodland creation and other regeneration projects. Foresters also work to improve tree genetics for various purposes in research institutions and laboratories. Forest engineers develop new building systems and other related forestry infrastructure. Other tasks include crafting timber into finished products. Professional specialized foresters measure and model the growth of forests using geographic information systems. Foresters also fight insect infestation, disease, forest and grassland wildfire, but may also allow these natural aspects of forest ecosystems to progress when the probability of epidemics or risk of loss life or property are low. Additionally, foresters play a part in wildlife conservation planning and watershed protection. Foresters have also been mainly associated with timber management, especially through reforestation, maintaining forests at prime conditions, and effective fire control.

WHAT IS THE WORK SCHEDULE OF A FORESTER?

Foresters working in government departments typically have the usual work schedule routine starting at 08 hours in the morning to 17 hours later in the afternoon/evening during the normal weekdays. However, on special occasions or assignments, the work schedule is adjusted to suit the particular situation. The daily routine during normal weekdays for those in the private sector or NGO’s varies. Although by Zambian Labour Laws, normal working days in a week are from Monday to Friday, some private companies and NGO’s tend to adjust up to half day on Saturday.

WHAT DOES THE JOB MARKET LOOK LIKE?

The biggest employing sector of foresters in Zambia is the government and its agencies, non-governmental organizations and private companies in that order. The need for foresters has never been met due to the continuous increasing negative effects of climate change being experienced world over. Therefore, the job market is always open due to the need to conserve nature, as well as the demand for timber and non-timber forest products.

WHAT SORT OF CAREER-PERSONALITY MATCH IS REQUIRED?

To be a good forester, one needs to be both physically and mentally fit with a great enthusiasm towards protecting the environment. A great love for the outdoors will easily make one fit into the field of forestry because majority of forestry activities are undertaken outside.

WHERE CAN I STUDY FORESTRY, FOR HOW LONG, TO EARN WHAT QUALIFICATION?

For a Bachelor’s degree, one needs to undertake four years of studying either full-time or on a distance basis to complete at the Copperbelt University. A Diploma in Forestry however only takes three years of study to complete. Only the Zambia Forestry College offers the diploma programme.

WHAT SUBJECTS WILL THE PROGRAM COVER?

Upon being admitted into a forestry training program, one is expected to undertake A-level science courses (Mathematics, Biology, Physics and Chemistry) in their first year of study. Upon successful completion of the first year, some of the other courses that one will undertake include Silviculture, Land Survey, Soil Science, Agroforestry, Forest Engineering, Biometry/Statistics, Extension, Entomology, Beekeeping and Management/Administration just to mention a few.

WHAT MODES OF STUDY ARE AVAILABLE?

Currently, forestry is being offered on both full-time and distance basis at the Copperbelt University and Zambia Forestry College.

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?

Being a natural science, the basic entry requirements into a forestry training program at the two institutions mentioned above are 5 credits or better. However, there is a biasness towards Mathematics, English and sciences being mandatory.

WHAT OTHER PROGRAMS OF STUDY CAN MAKE SOMEONE A FORESTER?

Currently, no other field of study can completely enable someone do all tasks that a trained forester can perform. Other professionals such as Agriculturalists, Agroforesters, Wildlife Managers and Natural Resource Managers can only partly complement some minor works of a forester.

WHAT ARE THE FUTURE ADVANCED QUALIFICATIONS AVAILABLE AND WHY?

Being a broad natural science based program, there are numerous advanced options of study that one can pursue related to forestry. These range from pursuing advanced studies in fields such Soil Science, Biometry, Forest Management Sciences, Natural Resources Management and Conservation, Climate Change, Wildlife Management and Conservation, Geographical Information Systems, Business Administration, Forest/Natural Resources Economics, amongst several other options.

WHAT IS FASHION AND DESIGN AND WHO IS A FASHION DESIGNER?

The program of fashion and design teaches the art of designing clothes, that both look good and serve a function, and also fashion accessories like hand bags. If you decide to do this program you may study the work of famous designers and the fashion culture of your country or the trending or most common fashion so that you learn how fashion designs come to life to become actual clothes. Because this course is an art you should know that it is very much connected to culture. This means that the clothes that you will concentrate on designing will be influenced a lot by the culture of where you are. Fashion designers are simply people who are skilled in the art of designing clothes and other fashion accessories.

WHERE DO FASHION DESIGNERS WORK?

When you decide to do fashion and design you can work for yourself by opening a shop of your own or you can work for a fashion and design firm. Upon getting their certificate, most fashion designers become self employed. Getting a job in a fashion house or firm can be difficult and holding higher qualifications can give you a better chance. Fashion designing is a skill that is dependent so much on the individual’s creativity and talent. Very talented designers may find themselves working for some of the big fashion companies and designer brands even with little or no formal education in the field.

WHAT TASKS ARE INVOLVED IN THE WORK?

The tasks that fashion designers have at work depend on where they work. If you are working for yourself as a fashion designer you have to design and make clothes usually by demand. This means you will create designs on request from your clients. Sometimes the clients may have an idea of the kind of design that they would like and will bring with them the material that they want to be used. In other cases, clients may just request you to make an outfit for them that they would like to wear to social event such as a kitchen party or a wedding and you, as the designer, will have to come up with the design and decide on what materials to use according to the customer’s taste. To aid the customers’ decision making, you may have to show them charts of different designs that they can pick from or you can make your own sketches on paper to show them. Once you have come up with a design, you can either present it to a tailor so they can make the actual outfit or you can make the actual outfit yourself if you have the skill of tailoring.

Working in a fashion house comes with more responsibilities. You may need to do research on what is trending in the fashion world and then make a decision on what to design. You will have to work in a team with other designers to come up with new ideas of clothes to make, make sketches of designs and oversee the production of these designs. You also are required to test and decide on materials, their colours and patterns for each design. Sometimes you can do fitting of clothes on models at fashion shows or photo shoots.

WHAT IS THE WORK SCHEDULE OF A FASHION DESIGNER?

Fashion designers that work for themselves make up their own work schedules depending on the tasks they have. Those employed by fashion houses typically work during the day from 08:00hrs to 17:00hrs on Monday-Friday. Work maybe done during the night and on weekends in the case where there are events that are coming up like a fashion week or when they have been booked, with a specific deadline, to make many clothes by an organisation or people going for some event.

The job market is tough for fashion designers because the fashion industry in Zambia is still developing and there are not that many fashion houses. As a result, most fashion designers are self-employed and make designs that they advertise on platforms like magazines and social media. It helps to be skilled in tailoring because that expands on the services that you can offer to your clientele.

WHAT SORT OF CAREER-PERSONALITY MATCH IS REQUIRED?

The personality that goes well with the program of fashion and design is being a person who is creative and artistic. Your knowledge and interest in colours, textures and shapes need to be good so that you can make clothes that stand out when you design them. You also need to be interested in fashion and fashion trends. You need to have an ability to draw and sketch.

The courses that you will learn in the program include clothing manufacturing, machine and sewing skills, pattern drafting, garment cutting, garment assembly, dressmaking, fabrics, design development, illustration and working drawings, layering and cutting of fabrics and many more.

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?

For the two year certificate in fashion and design you need to have a full grade 12 certificate, that is O’ level credits (grade 6) or better in any 5 subjects.

WHAT OTHER PROGRAMS OF STUDY CAN MAKE SOMEONE A FASHION DESIGNER?

An alternative program that you can pursue to become a designer is Tailoring and Design. Tailoring not only involves designing, but also cutting, fitting, altering, repairing and making clothes professionally.

WHAT ARE THE FUTURE ADVANCED QUALIFICATIONS AVAILABLE AND WHY?

You can advance your fashion and design qualification to diploma and degree level. Such advanced qualifications enable you to work for big fashion houses, companies and designer brands. However, in Zambia, at the time of writing this, only a certificate was offered in Fashion and Design.
