Heavy Equipment Repair

INSTITUTIONS OFFERING HEAVY EQUIPMENT REPAIR LISTED AT THE BOTTOM

WHAT IS HEAVY EQUIPMENT REPAIR AND WHO IS A HEAVY EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN?

This program is also known as heavy-duty equipment mechanics. It is a branch of mechanics that specialises in working with heavy machinery used in construction, farming, and railway transport. They work with big engines, inspecting, servicing and repairing any damage to the engine or vehicle. It is similar to automotive mechanics in many ways, the major difference in these two fields is that in heavy equipment repair the mechanic deals with very big machines with big engines while an auto mechanic only looks at small vehicles. A person who therefore is skilled in heavy equipment repair can be called a heavy equipment technician or mechanic.

WHERE DO HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANICS WORK?

Heavy equipment mechanics work in places where you find heavy equipment. Heavy equipment can be defined as heavy duty vehicles which are designed for doing construction tasks especially work that involves moving very heavy things such as rocks. Examples of these heavy machines include cranes, graders and bulldozers. Therefore, heavy equipment mechanics work in places with heavy equipment dealers, servicing companies and companies that own and operate heavy equipment. The places that make use of these machines include mines, railway systems and companies, commercial farms, construction companies etc., and this is where you find jobs for heavy equipment mechanics.

WHAT TASKS ARE INVOLVED IN THE WORK?

The tasks involved at work include the inspection of the machines so that they perform well and also to inspect for machines that may have problems. They investigate and look for the problems using testing equipment to determine the problem and how big the problem is. After finding the problem, they make adjustments to the machine and repair or replace parts, components or the whole system using hand or power tools. They also test the machines to ensure that they have been fixed well. They clean, lubricate and perform maintenance of the equipment especially on the engine and other moving parts such as the moving part of a crane.

WHAT IS THE WORK SCHEDULE OF A HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC?

The work schedule of a mechanic depends on where they work. Some companies may want to have a mechanic in the night because the company may operate in the night. But generally, there are no shifts in this job and the mechanics are usually called in if something goes wrong with the machines.

WHAT DOES THE JOB MARKET LOOK LIKE?

As stated above, the heavy equipment mechanics work in places where you can find the heavy machines working. In our case, the mines e.g. Kalumbila and Mopani copper mines and First Quantum minerals and small scale mining companies form part of the job market. Companies that have these machines (mobile cranes, self-loading trucks and forklifts etc.) for hire such as ECSTAL plant hire and Kings heavy machinery also employ them. The mechanics are also employed in commercial farms where their services are needed for the maintenance and repair of farm heavy machinery. The government through the city councils that have these machines such as graders also employs heavy equipment mechanics.

WHAT SORT OF CAREER-PERSONALITY MATCH IS REQUIRED?

The job of a heavy equipment mechanic is hands on and therefore on needs to be comfortable with working with their hands. One needs to have interest in physics, mathematics and technical drawing for the schooling in this program to be even more interesting and easier.

INSTITUTIONS OFFERING HEAVY EQUIPMENT REPAIR LISTED AT THE BOTTOM

WHAT SUBJECTS WILL THE PROGRAM COVER?

In the studying of heavy equipment the subjects that are taught include earth moving equipment technology, engineering science, engineering mathematics, engineering drawing, communication skills, workshop practice and workshop process and management.

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?

The entry requirements for heavy equipment repair at diploma, technician and craft level are a full grade 12 certificate with five ‘O’ level credits in subjects including Mathematics, English, Science. Entry requirements at the Trade-test level is a grade 9 or grade 7 certificate.

WHAT OTHER PROGRAMS OF STUDY CAN MAKE SOMEONE A HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC?

One has to study heavy equipment repair for them to be a heavy equipment mechanic or technician. But, an automotive mechanic can be skilled in a particular part of the heavy machines so that they have multiple skills that increase the chances of being employed. These courses are called bridging courses and one does a 6 months course (like at Northern Technical College, NORTEC) in a specific area like heavy duty engines, earth moving equipment braking systems, earth moving equipment transmission system. This bridging course requires that one has a certificate in automotive mechanics.

WHAT ARE THE FUTURE ADVANCED QUALIFICATIONS AVAILABLE AND WHY?

Further studies in this program are available in other countries but at the time of compiling this, there is no school in Zambia that offers a degree or a masters programs specifically for heavy equipment repair.

Fashion and Design

INSTITUTIONS OFFERING FASHION & DESIGN / TAILORING LISTED AT THE BOTTOM

WHAT IS FASHION AND DESIGN AND WHO IS A FASHION DESIGNER?

The program of fashion and design teaches the art of designing clothes, that both look good and serve a function, and also fashion accessories like hand bags. If you decide to do this program you may study the work of famous designers and the fashion culture of your country or the trending or most common fashion so that you learn how fashion designs come to life to become actual clothes. Because this course is an art you should know that it is very much connected to culture. This means that the clothes that you will concentrate on designing will be influenced a lot by the culture of where you are. Fashion designers are simply people who are skilled in the art of designing clothes and other fashion accessories.

WHERE DO FASHION DESIGNERS WORK?

When you decide to do fashion and design you can work for yourself by opening a shop of your own or you can work for a fashion and design firm. Upon getting their certificate, most fashion designers become self employed. Getting a job in a fashion house or firm can be difficult and holding higher qualifications can give you a better chance. Fashion designing is a skill that is dependent so much on the individual’s creativity and talent. Very talented designers may find themselves working for some of the big fashion companies and designer brands even with little or no formal education in the field.

WHAT TASKS ARE INVOLVED IN THE WORK?

The tasks that fashion designers have at work depend on where they work. If you are working for yourself as a fashion designer you have to design and make clothes usually by demand. This means you will create designs on request from your clients. Sometimes the clients may have an idea of the kind of design that they would like and will bring with them the material that they want to be used. In other cases, clients may just request you to make an outfit for them that they would like to wear to social event such as a kitchen party or a wedding and you, as the designer, will have to come up with the design and decide on what materials to use according to the customer’s taste. To aid the customers’ decision making, you may have to show them charts of different designs that they can pick from or you can make your own sketches on paper to show them. Once you have come up with a design, you can either present it to a tailor so they can make the actual outfit or you can make the actual outfit yourself if you have the skill of tailoring.

Working in a fashion house comes with more responsibilities. You may need to do research on what is trending in the fashion world and then make a decision on what to design. You will have to work in a team with other designers to come up with new ideas of clothes to make, make sketches of designs and oversee the production of these designs. You also are required to test and decide on materials, their colours and patterns for each design. Sometimes you can do fitting of clothes on models at fashion shows or photo shoots.

WHAT IS THE WORK SCHEDULE OF A FASHION DESIGNER?

Fashion designers that work for themselves make up their own work schedules depending on the tasks they have. Those employed by fashion houses typically work during the day from 08:00hrs to 17:00hrs on Monday-Friday. Work maybe done during the night and on weekends in the case where there are events that are coming up like a fashion week or when they have been booked, with a specific deadline, to make many clothes by an organisation or people going for some event.

WHAT DOES THE JOB MARKET LOOK LIKE?

The job market is tough for fashion designers because the fashion industry in Zambia is still developing and there are not that many fashion houses. As a result, most fashion designers are self-employed and make designs that they advertise on platforms like magazines and social media. It helps to be skilled in tailoring because that expands on the services that you can offer to your clientele.

WHAT SORT OF CAREER-PERSONALITY MATCH IS REQUIRED?

The personality that goes well with the program of fashion and design is being a person who is creative and artistic. Your knowledge and interest in colours, textures and shapes need to be good so that you can make clothes that stand out when you design them. You also need to be interested in fashion and fashion trends. You need to have an ability to draw and sketch.

INSTITUTIONS OFFERING FASHION & DESIGN / TAILORING LISTED AT THE BOTTOM

WHAT SUBJECTS WILL THE PROGRAM COVER?

The courses that you will learn in the program include clothing manufacturing, machine and sewing skills, pattern drafting, garment cutting, garment assembly, dressmaking, fabrics, design development, illustration and working drawings, layering and cutting of fabrics and many more.

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?

For the two year certificate in fashion and design you need to have a full grade 12 certificate, that is O’ level credits (grade 6) or better in any 5 subjects.

WHAT OTHER PROGRAMS OF STUDY CAN MAKE SOMEONE A FASHION DESIGNER?

An alternative program that you can pursue to become a designer is Tailoring and Design. Tailoring not only involves designing, but also cutting, fitting, altering, repairing and making clothes professionally.

WHAT ARE THE FUTURE ADVANCED QUALIFICATIONS AVAILABLE AND WHY?

You can advance your fashion and design qualification to diploma and degree level. Such advanced qualifications enable you to work for big fashion houses, companies and designer brands. However, in Zambia, at the time of writing this, only a certificate was offered in Fashion and Design.

Electrical Technology

INSTITUTIONS OFFERING ELECTRICAL TECHNOLOGY LISTED AT THE BOTTOM

WHAT IS ELECTRICAL TECHNOLOGY AND WHO IS AN ELECTRICAL TECHNOLOGIST?

Electrical technology is the study of electricity, electrical equipment and the installation, maintenance and repair of such equipment. In other words you can say that it is the technology of producing, storing, controlling, transmitting and getting work from electricity. In the program, you learn the science behind electricity and how to apply that knowledge in making or repairing electrical equipment, appliances or devices. Examples of these include the torch (flashlight), doorbell, heater, hair dryer etc. An electrical technologist is a person who has studied electricity and electrical equipment and is able to install, maintain and repair these equipment. These people study machines, equipment and systems that conduct or produce electricity.

WHERE DO ELECTRICAL TECHNOLOGISTS WORK?

As an electrical technologist you can work in power generation and distribution companies such as ZESCO or Copperbelt Energy Corporation (CEC) or North Western Energy Corporation (NWEC). Other places where you are likely to be employed include companies that offer electrical solutions and also install equipment such as solar panels and batteries. These companies include Kasuba power solutions, Savenda electrical and hardware Ltd, Ganesh power solutions etc. There are also other companies like Slimline electronics and COPTECH Construction Zambia, that distribute electrical appliances and help install or repair them. As an electrical technologist, you can also open your own repair shop where clients can bring in their electrical or electronic equipment for repairs.

WHAT TASKS ARE INVOLVED IN THE WORK?

The type of tasks that you are expected to do as an electrical technologist depend on where you work. In power generation and distribution companies, you work with electrical engineers in the distribution of electricity to the company’s customers. Specific work done includes installation of transformers, extension of the power grid, connection of buildings to the power grid, and installation of electricity meters among other things. Electrical technologists also carry out installation of the wiring of buildings or factories and join these wires to outlets, transformers and circuit breakers. In addition, they also test wiring and connections to make sure they are working fine. For testing, the electrical technologists use voltmeters, ohmmeters, ammeters and other instruments. For those working in equipment repair, you are expected to replace things such as wires, switches, fuses and circuit breakers and on top of that perform what is called preventive maintenance. Preventive maintenance in this case is carrying out maintenance on electrical equipment before a fault develops.

WHAT IS THE WORK SCHEDULE OF AN ELECTRICAL TECHNOLOGIST?

As an electrical technologist you are most likely going to work from 08:00 hrs to 17:00 hrs from Monday to Friday in most places. In some work places you can be required to work at night but this is not very common.

WHAT SORT OF CAREER-PERSONALITY MATCH IS REQUIRED?

To be an electrical technologist you need to have interest in physics and mathematics. These subjects in high school help you to understand and appreciate what you will be taught in college or university.

Carpentry and Joinery (Woodwork Technology)

INSTITUTIONS OFFERING CARPENTRY AND JOINERY LISTED AT THE BOTTOM

WHAT IS CARPENTRY AND JOINERY WHO IS A CARPENTER OR JOINER?

Carpentry is a skilled trade or a craft in which the main work that is done is the cutting, shaping and installing furniture for buildings and building materials such as roofs and stairs during the construction of buildings. Carpentry and joinery also involves skilled work using timber either in a work shop or at a construction site. You can divide carpentry into residential (involving things in a household), commercial (constructing schools, hospitals, malls etc.) and industrial (building tunnels, dams etc.) carpentry. A carpenter is a person who has the skill to work with wood and is able to make or repair things that are made out of wood. A joiner is a person that joins pieces of wood using various means to produce more complex items. Some carpenters/joiners never actually go to school for this trade but learn through apprenticeship. In this article we will refer to both carpenters and/or joiners simply as carpenters.

WHERE DO CARPENTERS WORK?

When you do carpentry you will most likely work for yourself or you may form a group with others who have done carpentry and work for yourselves at a workshop. Sometimes carpenters do some work with builders or construction companies so that they help with doing things such as roofing and furniture. You can also work for an interior decorating company so that if they have to make something wooden as they are decorating you can be the one to do it.

WHAT TASKS ARE INVOLVED IN THE WORK?

As a carpenter the tasks that you will have to do could include making wooden furniture, doors and floors. Carpenters also do renovating and refitting in buildings that have already been built. When they do these things they measure, mark, cut, shape, fit and finish up (mostly by vanishing) the timber. They do this by using hand tools such as chisels and, power tools. When working in construction, carpenters not only make furniture and other fittings but they also help in making the frames for the buildings. The kinds of furniture that carpenters make includes shelves, cupboards, chairs, beds, window frames, and doors. These items are made either in a workshop or at the construction site.

WHAT IS THE WORK SCHEDULE OF A CARPENTER?

There is no fixed schedule in this profession because most carpenters are self-employed. Work is done depending on the projects that someone is working on.

WHAT SORT OF CAREER-PERSONALITY MATCH IS REQUIRED?

Carpenters should generally be outgoing and enjoying working with their hands. This is because the job itself is manual and so you have to enjoy doing things that involve cutting and joining. You also need to have good problem solving skills and with a good imagination that will help you come up with creative designs that you will use to make various kinds of furniture. You also need to be someone who pays attention to detail and aesthetic in order to make something that is pleasing to the eyes.

INSTITUTIONS OFFERING CARPENTRY AND JOINERY LISTED AT THE BOTTOM

WHAT SUBJECTS WILL THE PROGRAM COVER?

Some of the courses that will be done when you decide to go to a school that offers carpentry and joinery include drawing, identification and measurement of materials, hand tool selection, care and use, machine woodworking, project management and estimating, framing and finishing, roofing, door and window layout and construction among others. During the times when you will be in school you will do a lot of practical work because this program is very practical rather than theoretical.

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?

The entry requirement at craft level is a full grade 12 certificate (5 O’ levels). The minimum entry requirement at Trade-test level is a grade 7 or grade 9 certificate.

WHAT OTHER PROGRAMS OF STUDY CAN MAKE SOMEONE A CARPENTER?

There are no other programs that will train someone to be a carpenter apart from carpentry and joinery

WHAT ARE THE FUTURE ADVANCED QUALIFICATIONS AVAILABLE AND WHY?

There is currently no advanced program at degree or master’s level in carpentry that is being offered in Zambia.

Plumbing, Pipefitting and Sheet Metal

INSTITUTIONS OFFERING PLUMBING, PIPEFITTING AND SHEET METAL LISTED AT THE BOTTOM

WHAT IS PLUMBING AND WHO IS A PLUMBER?

You can define plumbing as a course that involves the study of the systems of pipes, tanks, fittings and other equipment that are required for the supply of water, heating and other sanitation in the building. This system of pipes, tanks and fittings is called the plumbing of the building. In this program you learn how to do toilet plumbing and fixtures, building sewers, water taps and heating and cooling lines. The sheet metal part of the course teaches you the maintenance and fabrication of almost any object made from sheet metal (very thin, flat sheets of metal). Fabrication is making something from already-made parts, it’s like assembling something from the parts that make it up. After defining plumbing as a course, you can say that a plumber is a person who installs and maintains pipes and other kinds of plumbing in a building.

WHERE DO PLUMBERS WORK?

When it comes to where plumbers work, we can say they work in any place that has pipes and any other plumbing such as geysers. They work mostly for themselves serving their clients who may be household owners or landlords etc. If they work for a company it is usually a construction company or a water and sewerage company because of their knowledge of water pipes and sewers. Sometimes companies or workplaces or buildings such as hospitals and office complexes may have their own plumber. This plumber does all the plumbing work that the company buildings require. Another employer is the local government through the city councils.

WHAT TASKS ARE INVOLVED IN THE WORK?

As a plumber the tasks that you are expected to do are to install or put together systems of pipes that supply water to a building. This is usually done during the time a building is being built and so you will most likely work with builders/bricklayers. Sanitation and heating systems (such as geysers) are also put up by the plumbers. On top of this, you are also to install bathrooms including showers, toilets and bathtubs. Other tasks that you will do include repairing of any leaking pipes or toilets, unclogging of blocked pipes or any other plumbing that is not working properly. You will also maintain and do fabrication (assembly) and installation of stainless-steel metal such as sinks and counters, rain gutters and downspouts (the metallic pipes that are put at the edge of a roof to collect water from rain and then carry it down to the ground or a drainage).

WHAT IS THE WORK SCHEDULE OF A PLUMBER?

There is really no work schedule that you will have as a plumber. You will be called when needed or rather hired when there is a need for pipes, sinks and bathrooms etc. to be fitted or repaired. Sometimes you can be called on the weekends or during the night when there is, for instance, a large leaking pipe especially in places like hospitals or factories that may be open even at night. Although, if you work for a water and sewerage company there may be a shift that you may follow and this is usually a day job.

WHAT DOES THE JOB MARKET LOOK LIKE?

You may have challenges finding a full-time job with a company or in the government. In most cases, plumbers just work for themselves either part-time with a number of different clients, or freelance. Freelance simply means making yourself available to clients when your services are required and getting paid per job or task that you do.

WHAT SORT OF CAREER-PERSONALITY MATCH IS REQUIRED?

The personality that is required to do plumbing is one that is outgoing and a person who is able and likes working with their hands. This is because the job itself is manual and so you have to enjoy doing things that involve joining and cutting. You also need to have good problem solving skills and with a good imagination to help you come up with the best way you are going to install water supply and disposal systems in a building.

INSTITUTIONS OFFERING PLUMBING, PIPEFITTING AND SHEET METAL LISTED AT THE BOTTOM

WHAT SUBJECTS WILL THE PROGRAM COVER?

When you have been accepted in the schools that offer this program you will learn courses that may include plumbing workshop practice, management of water resources, distribution and disposal systems, design and installation of water supply systems and, drawing and interpretation of plumbing drawings.

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?

To study plumbing at craft level you need to have a full grade 12 certificate, some colleges or institutions may only require two credits and 3 passes or better including Mathematics and English. The minimum entry requirement at Trade-test level is a grade 7 or 9 certificate.

WHAT OTHER PROGRAMS OF STUDY CAN MAKE SOMEONE A PLUMBER?

An alternative program that can qualify someone to perform most of the work of a plumber is water engineering. Water engineering is a much wider field that trains people in water resources management of which plumbing is only a minor component.

WHAT ARE THE FUTURE ADVANCED QUALIFICATIONS AVAILABLE AND WHY?

Someone who has studied plumbing at craft level can upgrade to the diploma. Alternatively, you can decide to pursue a diploma in water engineering which can be upgraded to degree and master’s level. Obtaining these qualifications broadens your knowledge beyond just plumbing and this gives you a better chance of getting employed by construction companies and water and sewerage companies.

WHAT IS MECHANICAL TECHNOLOGY AND WHO IS A MECHANICAL TECHNOLOGIST?

Mechanical technology can be defined as the application of engineering principles and technology to create useful products and machinery that is used in production. In another way, you can define it as the technology of putting together mechanical parts to produce and control motion. What this means is that mechanical technology deals with bringing different mechanical parts so that the machines that are made are able to produce a wide range of movements and that the movements of these machines are well controlled. A mechanical technologist is someone, using his/her knowledge of mechanics, puts together mechanical parts so that he/she builds something that produces an intentional and controlled movement.

WHERE DO MECHANICAL TECHNOLOGISTS WORK?

Mechanical technologists work in places that require usage of machines that have moving parts. These places include plants and factories examples of which are Trade Kings, Zambian Breweries, Mansa Sugar, Lafarge Zambia, Nitrogen Chemicals of Zambia, etc. Other industries that employ mechanical technologists include the Mining industry, Electricity Production and Distribution companies, City councils, Government, Railway Systems of Zambia and other companies. Automotive Mechanics

INSTITUTIONS OFFERING AUTOMOTIVE MECHANICS LISTED AT THE BOTTOM

WHAT IS AUTOMOTIVE MECHANICS AND WHO IS AN AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC?

Automotive mechanics, also called auto mechanics, is the occupation of repairing and maintaining automobiles or simply cars. An automotive mechanic is a person who repairs and maintains cars. He/she may be specialised in a specific area like brakes or suspension or in a specific make of cars such as Mercedes. Their main job is to find out the problem of the car accurately and in the shortest period of time, thereafter, they repair whatever is damaged.

WHERE DO AUTOMOTIVE MECHANICS WORK?

Auto mechanics work in garages that may be government or private owned. The government owned garages are usually attached to a particular ministry such as the ministry of health to service and repair that ministries cars. In the private owned garages, the general public take their cars for servicing and repair.

WHAT TASKS ARE INVOLVED IN THE WORK?

At work, vehicle maintenance and servicing are important parts of the job. Maintenance is what is regularly done on the car so that it stays in good condition and it is scheduled e.g. changing of oil. Servicing is done when there is need for something specific to be fixed that is normally not fixed or changed during maintenance.

The tasks include installation and repair of air-conditioners and their parts such as compressors. Brake systems, engine and fuel management, ignition and emission or exhaust systems are also worked on by the auto mechanics. Wheels alignment and balancing are also part of the job of the auto mechanic.

Apart from servicing, maintenance and repair, the mechanics also perform preventive maintenance where they do replacement of car parts before the parts get damaged. This also involves making a list of parts to buy and the price.

WHAT IS THE WORK SCHEDULE OF AN AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC?
