WHAT IS EDUCATION WITH SCIENCE AND WHO IS A SCIENCE EDUCATOR?
Education with sciences is a diploma or degree awarded to students who complete the three or four year course of study in the field of science (major and minor in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics) with major Educational courses.
A person who has studied education with science is called a Science Educator. Education is a profession that complements a range of personality types, though individuals who enjoy sharing their passion for science are ideal candidates. Science educators can major in a particular field such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Mathematics.

WHERE DO THEY WORK?
Science educators can work for government secondary schools and private schools as well as mission schools in various parts of the country as teachers. Every year teachers of sciences and mathematics get recruited by the government and they get posted in various teaching centres.

Those with majors in chemistry and biology can also work in food manufacturing and chemical related industries such as Nitrogen Chemicals of Zambia.

Graduates of education with sciences also work in banks and other business sectors. Because most jobs done in the banks are trainable, banks and other companies every year recruit fresh graduates to work as graduate trainees and upon impressing the employers, some graduates get employed permanently. This makes a degree in the field of science a general qualification that can land you a job from any company.

WHAT TASKS ARE INVOLVED IN THE WORK?
For the graduates who go on to become professional teachers of Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics in secondary schools, their day to day job involves, Planning lessons in specific subjects and present them to pupils using creative teaching techniques, Assessing the weaknesses, strengths and abilities of every student each week and address them appropriately, Maintaining obvious rules for a disciplined classroom that still allows pupils to feel comfortable asking questions and brainstorming and adapt lesson plans when class sizes change or pupils are struggling with a particularly difficult concept among other tasks.

The work schedule or shifts of a graduate in Education with sciences depends on the organisation one is working for. For those that go on to become teachers of mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology either in government or private schools they work half office hours from 07hrs to 13hrs while some knock off according to their class time tables and their lesson plans.
If one is working for a government department or agency, they typically follow the normal 08hrs to 17hrs work schedule Monday to Friday.
If one is working for a bank, banks open at 08hrs and close at 16hrs for customers. After that they continue with the checks and balances behind closed doors until they are done that’s when they knock off.

The job market for someone who studies education with science is broad. Most jobs by business companies are trainable jobs and the chances of finding a job is high because the education with science is a general qualification. You can find can a job mostly in government in the education sector to start with because generally the qualification is meant for teaching.

Various Banks continue to look for more graduate trainees in various fields. Generally banks get graduates of degrees regardless of the field of study and train them. Therefore, graduates of education with science are likely to be recruited by Banks.

For those that major in education with mathematics, they have opportunities of working in government departments and agencies like RTSA as statisticians or the Central Statistical Office(CSO).

To enjoy being a teacher in this field, you need to be a person who loves science based subjects. In your first year you will learn these and you need to pass them. When one enrols into university to study sciences with education, they will learn A level science in the first year i.e. Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. They combine the A level sciences with educational courses like Introduction to Education and Communication skills. And in the following years they start to narrow down to more specific subjects such as mathematics with education, biology with education, physics with education and chemistry with education as examples of subjects to be covered as their major courses. For example, In a case where you major in Mathematics in second year you will study courses like linear algebra, Mathematical methods 1, Real Analysis, Introduction to Statistics and Probability combining with any two available educational courses like Education Psychology and Sociology of Education as well as Education Media Technology. In your 3rd year you will have to do courses like group ring theory, statistics, calculus, mathematics teaching methods and research methods. And in your final year you will have to study real analysis II, Mathematics Education project, statistics II, Complex Analysis, mathematics education and education management and administration as a minor course. All students are required to complete both teaching observation and to practice teaching at approved schools in the final year.

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?

At all the institutions the requirements are as follows: Grade 6 or better in English Language, Grade 4 or better in O’ level Mathematics PLUS Grade 6 or better in Biology (or Agricultural Science), Chemistry and Physics OR Grade 6 or better in Science, Biology (or Agricultural Science) and any other acceptable subject. But at UNZA and CBU most science based programs are competitive and entry depends on the levels of competition in the University. Typically, they look for 12points in 5 subjects and which should include Mathematics, Science, and English with three other subjects. These entry requirements may differ from institution to institution and from year to year actually.

WHAT OTHER PROGRAMS OF STUDY CAN MAKE SOMEONE AN EDUCATION SCIENTIST?

Students who enrol for education with sciences go on to become teachers mostly and if you study earth sciences based courses such as geochemistry, or any science like Biochemistry and geophysics can also become education scientists provided that they do the teaching methodology courses, but typically a Zambian education scientist needs to have a degree in science with education. Also, any science that is taught in schools, if combined with teaching methodology, a graduate in any science field can be a teacher.

WHERE DO EARLY CHILDHOOD TEACHER WORK?

Pursuing a career in early childhood education in Zambia can lead you to work in various types of workplaces. Commonly, early childhood educators will work within a school setting but can work from care centers or private residences. Listed below are potential workplaces for early childhood education professionals:  government schools, private Schools, Special Education schools, Kindergarten Centers and Daycare centers. (Daycare center is a place where people who cannot be fully independent such us small children can be taken care of. In Zambia we have them in form of nursery schools).

WHAT TASKS ARE INVOLVED IN THE WORK?

Every school and daycare center has its own specific rules and regulations, but early childhood educators are expected to perform the following common tasks:

Create Lesson Plans, Early childhood educators design their own lesson and classroom instruction plans based on state-approved and school-approved curriculum. Lead Daily Activities, Early childhood educators lead daily social, learning, and physical activities for all children in their assigned classes. Monitor Children, Early childhood educators are responsible for the overall health and welfare of the children in their classroom, which requires diligent monitoring of all children during learning times, meal times, restroom breaks, and nap times.

Encourage and Engage Children, as an early childhood educator, it is necessary to keep all children active and engaged while they are in the classroom. They are ultimately responsible for keeping the classroom clean, organized, and stimulating for children.

Assess In-Class and Homework Assignments, Early childhood educators must assess all work submitted by students and provide progress reports to parents detailing their child’s success completing classroom work. Attend Staff Meetings, Early childhood educators must attend mandatory workshops, conferences, and staff meetings as directed by school guidelines.

If one is working for a government or private school they typically follow the normal 08hrs to 16hrs work schedule Monday to Friday. They report for work at 08hrs and have a mid-morning break at 10hrs and break off for lunch at 12hrs. The day ends at 16hrs and 17hrs latest on certain occasions.

An early childhood educator can find a job as a Preschool Teacher: Preschool teachers introduce young children to education and prepare them for kindergarten. They also look for signs of emotional or developmental issues and bring them to the attention of parents or guardians. The early childhood teacher job description can vary between childcare centers.

They also find jobs as Kindergarten School Teachers: Kindergarten school teachers create lesson plans for math, English, social studies and science, but also to teach pupils the soft skills they need to be successful in school. WHAT IS SPECIAL EDUCATION AND WHO IS A SPECIAL EDUCATIONIST?

Special education is a field of study specially designed to address the unique needs of a student eligible to receive special education services. It is a form of learning provided to students with exceptional needs, such as students with learning disabilities or mental challenges.

A Special Educationist is someone who educates children who face physical, mental, emotional, and learning disabilities.

WHERE DO SPECIAL EDUCATION GRADUATES WORK?

Graduates of special education work in various settings, such as media houses like ZNBC, MUVI TV, DIAMOND TV where they do sign languages interpretation for news and other TV programs. They also work in special needs schools and child care centers. Special education teachers work with children who have different physical, mental and emotional disabilities. They assess the skills of these children and adopt lesson plans based on their specific needs. They monitor the performance of the children in class and discuss their progress with parents and counselors. Examples of special needs schools where special educationists may work are private schools like Proactive WAYS Academy in Lusaka and public schools like Chileshe Chepela in Kasama. A few may work with students in residential settings and hospitals. They also work for governmental organizations like the National Paralympic Committee of Zambia (NPCZ). Most of all they work for NGOs that have the interest for people living with disabilities. Special educationists are qualified teachers and can also work in non-special needs schools.

WHAT TASKS ARE INVOLVED IN THE WORK?

The day to day tasks for Special Education Teachers include: to develop teaching plans according to students’ learning needs. They search for activities and resources that can be easily adapted to each child’s educational requirements. They also collaborate with school counselors, occupational therapists, psychologists, and parents to help children develop and socialize.

Assess students’ abilities and craft teaching plans, adapt learning materials to students’ needs, Keep track of and reflect on students’ progress, Monitor children’s behavioral patterns and arrange appropriate interventions if needed, Find engaging activities to teach skills (e.g. drawing and theater drama), Inform parents about their children’s performance and potential problems, Coach/mentor other professionals who work with children with disabilities, Collaborate with the support staff (e.g. school counselors and speech therapists) to create holistic intervention plans. WHAT IS THE WORK SCHEDULE OF A SPECIAL EDUCATION GRADUATE?

Special education teachers typically work during school hours. In addition to providing instruction during this time, they grade papers, update students’ records, and prepare lessons. They may meet with parents, students, and other teachers or specialists before and after classes. Many work the traditional 9-month school year and have a 3-month break which usually comes after every term. Time for classes differ, some work from 07hrs to 12hrs while others report for work at 12hrs and knock off at 17hrs.

WHAT DOES THE JOB MARKET LOOK LIKE?

Demand for special education services and teachers in Zambia and around the world is on the rise as disabilities are being identified earlier and as children with disabilities are enrolled into special education programs. Zambian government and other well-meaning NGOs wish to maintain the same level of financial support for special education in every part of the country. This reduces the threat of employment layoffs due to government or NGO budget constraints. However, employment growth may depend on increases in funding.

The graduates of special education find jobs as rehabilitation counselors. Rehabilitation counselors work in assisted living facilities, private rehab centers, prisons, and school systems, government-run programs that help people and children with disabilities gain or regain independence. Oftentimes, it’s assumed that when a person faces unusual challenges, be they developmental, physical, emotional, or a combination of these and others, that what he or she needs can be handled through education.  They also find jobs as special education tester, screening for unique challenges is necessary so that early diagnosis can result in early intervention and education that can more effectively benefit affected individuals and their families.

They also find jobs as special education specialist for some students whose learning disabilities are especially challenging, simply occupying a space in a special education classroom is unlikely to yield desired results. In situations like this, special education specialists are called upon to help students with needs that can’t be adequately served by a more traditional special educational approach. They also find jobs as educational diagnostician. Through the use of diagnostic tests, educational diagnosticians assess students’ learning disabilities to guide everyone involved in a child’s educational plan toward the best educational goals, practices, and options for him or her.

WHAT SORT OF CAREER-PERSONALITY MATCH IS REQUIRED?

To enjoy being a special education teacher you need to be someone who has communication skills. Special education teachers discuss students’ needs and performances with general education teachers, parents and administrators. They also explain difficult concepts in terms that students with learning disabilities can understand. You also need to be full of resourcefulness. Special education teachers develop different ways to present information in a manner that meets the needs of their students. They also help general education teachers adapt their lessons to the needs of students with disabilities. You also need to be someone with Patience. Working with students with special needs and different abilities can be difficult. Special education teachers should be patient with each student, because some may need the instruction given aloud, at a slower pace, or in writing.

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?

To study special education at any institution in Zambia you need to have the following: Five “O” level credits including English Language or a Zambian language and Three “O” level credits in any of the following subjects: History, Geography, French, English Literature, Mathematics, Commerce, Additional Mathematics, Science or Physical Science or Biology or Agricultural Science and Religious Education.

WHAT OTHER PROGRAMS OF STUDY CAN MAKE SOMEONE A SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER?

An alternative program to special education is Social Work, Social workers help people solve and cope with problems in their everyday lives. Clinical social workers also diagnose and treat mental, behavioral, and emotional issues.  But typically a Zambian special education teacher, one needs to have a degree in special education.

WHAT ARE THE FUTURE ADVANCED QUALIFICATIONS AVAILABLE AND WHY?

Experienced teachers can advance to become mentors or lead teachers who help less experienced teachers improve their teaching skills. Teachers may become school counsellors, instructional coordinators and elementary, middle and high school principals. These positions generally require additional education, an advanced degree, or certification. An advanced degree in education especially masters will earn you jobs like Rehabilitation counsellor. If you hope to be a rehabilitation counsellor, a special education teacher, or a diagnostician, a master’s degree in special education will get you there.

With a master’s in special education, you can play a role in aiding students with exceptional needs by creating diagnostic tests designed to identify what a child’s needs and challenges may be. Secondary school teachers will prepare report forms, listen to oral presentations, observe a pupil’s performance and potential as well as meet with members of the staff and parents to go over any personal problems or the academic progress of a pupil. For pupils having trouble in a particular area, secondary school teachers will assess the problem and work with them to improve in that particular area.

Secondary school teachers are responsible for going into subjects deeper and teaching them more information about the world. If one is working for a government departments or any other business company apart from teaching, they typically follow the normal 08hrs to 17hrs work schedule Monday to Friday. If one is working as a secondary school teacher, they work from 07hrs to 13hrs from Monday to Friday and they are entitled to holidays (school breaks) usually one month every after a term (a term runs for three months) and they are also entitling to other public holidays.

Secondary Teaching Diploma students are required to complete Teaching Courses specific to their concentration. WHAT IS THE WORK SCHEDULE OF A PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHER?

The work schedule or shifts of a primary school teacher in both the government schools and private schools differs in that, in government school primary school pupils have classes at different times, some classes start at 07hrs and end and 10rs the ones start from 10hrs and end at 13hrs and the last schedule is from 13hrs to 16hrs for lower grades of grade 1 to grade 4 and from grade 5 to grade 7 some classes start from 12rs to 17hrs. This means that government school teachers start and knock off at different hours.

WHAT IS LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE?

Library and Information Science (LIS) is the academic and professional study of how information and information carriers are produced, disseminated, discovered, evaluated, selected, acquired, used, organised, maintained, and managed. It equips learners with knowledge and skills to effectively manage the information and knowledge resources of organisations. LIS graduates use these knowledge and skills to organise and provide relevant and accurate information on health, education, the environment, industry, good governance, freedom, human rights, and wealth creation, among others. Information is vital for informed action at all levels of decision making such as in budgeting, policy making, research and development, and even in democratic governance for transparency and accountability.

WHERE DO LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENTISTS WORK?

Library and information scientists can work as librarians or library assistants in public libraries (run by the town councils), school libraries, academic libraries (such as those in colleges and universities), and special or corporate libraries (may be found in every type of institution or organisation such as the Bank of Zambia, museums, government agencies, religious organisations etc.). The position held depends on one’s qualification, experience, and the type and size of the library. For instance, a diploma holder may be employed in the capacity of librarian in a private school library but may only work as library assistant in a large university library.

Library and information scientists can also work as archivists or records managers in government departments or ministries or in any organisation in need of information workers such as law firms, corporations and research institutes.

WHAT TASKS ARE INVOLVED IN THE WORK?

A typical day for a librarian may involve tasks such as shelving of books, shelf-reading (ensuring all reading material is in order), purchasing and acquisition of books, and cataloguing and classification. Librarians also answer common queries from library users and assist them. In academic and school libraries, librarians teach pupils and students how to effectively use the libraries multitude of resources and how to evaluate and use outside resources. They also work hand in hand with faculty to select, acquire and maintain a resource collection that supports the curricula as well as the research needs of students and faculty. Librarians may also assist in research by way of gathering, analysing, synthesising and presenting external information to the researcher especially in corporate libraries.

WHAT IS THE WORK SCHEDULE OF A LIBRARIAN?

The work schedule of a librarian or library assistant depends on the library where one works and the position held. If you work in a school library, the work hours usually run from 08:00 hours to 16:00 hours, Monday to Friday. University and college libraries are typically open for longer hours (09:00 hours to 22:00 hours) and are open even on weekends. As such, work is done in shifts. There could be a day shift, running from 09:00 hours to 16: hours and an evening shift running from 16:00 hours to 22:00 hours. Individuals holding senior positions in the library will not work in such shifts but rather work from 09:00-17:00 hours Monday to Friday. Special (corporate) libraries usually just follow the normal 08:00-17:00 hours work schedule from Monday to Friday.

SALARY RANGES AND WHAT CONTROLS IT

Entry level salaries for certificate holders range from 3500zmw-5000zmw while those for diploma holders range from 5000zmw to 13 000zmw in some private institutions. Salaries for the degree holder could go as high as 20 000zmw depending on the institution, position held and level of experience.

The world has moved into an information age and LIS professionals are no longer just concerned with books but are responsible for managing all modes of information including digital data. LIS professionals are the much-needed experts in this information age. Their expertise is required in a variety of settings in almost every type of organisation. There is thus a decent number of employment opportunities. At UNZA, LIS is typically offered as a double major along with another humanities program such as public administration, development studies or economics which further broadens the employment prospects.

WHAT SORT OF CAREER-PERSONALITY MATCH IS REQUIRED?

To enjoy a career in library and information science, one needs to be detail-oriented and organised, and able to work in a structured environment. They also need to be social, because working in a library involves interacting with many different kinds of people.

To advance their qualifications, degree holders can study for the Master of library and information science (MLIS) and later pursue a PhD in the same or any other relevant field. A master’s or PhD increases the opportunities of working in senior roles especially in public libraries, university libraries or research institutes. A master’s degree also enables one to work in the capacity of a lecturer and gives an upper hand in the job market.
