HUMAN RESOURCE-CAREER INFORMATION SUMMARY
WHAT IS HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT AND WHO IS A HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGER?
Human Resource Management is the process of recruiting, selecting, inducting employees, providing orientation, imparting training and development, appraising the performance of employees, deciding compensation and providing benefits, motivating employees, maintaining proper relations with employees and their trade unions, ensuring employees safety, welfare and health measures in compliance with Zambian labour.
A person who has studied Human Resource is called Human Resource Officer/Manager. He/she is the personnel of a business or organization, regarded as a significant asset in terms of skills and abilities. Human Resource is also a department of a business or organization that deals with the hiring, administration, and training of staff.
WHERE DO HUMAN RESOURCE GRADUATES WORK?
Human resources officers/managers are employed in nearly every industry. They work for both small and large business corporations and organizations as well in all government departments. Every business or organization wants to attract, motivate, and keep qualified employees and match them to jobs for which they are well-suited. Human resources managers accomplish this aim by directing the administrative functions of human resources departments.
Some companies out-source the Human Resource Management duties; therefore, HR people can work in consulting firms that offer HR services.
WHAT TASKS ARE INVOLVED IN THE WORK?
Human resources officers/managers plan, direct, and coordinate the administrative functions of an organization. They oversee the recruiting, interviewing, and hiring of new staff, consult with top executives on strategic planning and serve as a link between an organization's management and its employees. Their work involves overseeing employee relations, securing regulatory compliance, and administering employee-related services such as payroll, training, and benefits. They supervise the department's specialists and support staff and make sure that tasks are completed accurately and on time.
Human resources officer/managers also consult with top executives regarding the organization's strategic planning and talent management issues. They identify ways to maximize the value of the organization's employees and ensure that they are used as efficiently as possible. For example, they might assess worker productivity and recommend changes to the organization's structure to help the organization meet budgetary goals.
Some human resources officers/managers oversee all aspects of an organization's human resources department, including the compensation and benefits program and the training and development program.
WHAT IS THE WORK SCHEDULE OF A HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGER?
They work in offices and most work full time during regular business hours. Some must travel to attend professional meetings or to recruit employees. Most human resources managers work full time during regular business hours, they typically follow the normal 08hrs to 17hrs work schedule Monday to Friday.
WHAT DOES THE JOB MARKET LOOK LIKE?
Employment of human resources managers is growing every day and faster than the average for all occupations. As new companies form and organizations expand their operations, they will need human resources managers to oversee and administer their programs and to ensure that firms adhere to changing and complex employment laws. Strong competition can be expected for most positions.
The largest employers of human resources managers are as follows, the private sector employs more of the Human Resource managers for Management of companies and enterprises, as well as to handle technical services. The public sector is the second largest employer, all Zambian Government departments and agencies need Human Resource managers. Although job opportunities are expected to vary with the staffing needs of individual companies, strong competition can be expected for most positions. Graduates with certification of bachelor’s degree or a master's degree, particularly those with a concentration in human resources management should have the best job prospects.
Although certification is voluntary, it can show professional expertise and credibility, and it may enhance advancement opportunities. Many employers prefer to hire certified candidates, and some positions may require certification with The Zambia Institute of Human Resource Management (ZIHRM). This is a professional organization established through an Act of Parliament No. 11 of 1997.
WHAT SORT OF CAREER-PERSONALITY MATCH IS REQUIRED?
To enjoy being a Human Resources Officer/Manager you need to be someone who has Decision-making skills, Human resources managers must be able to balance the strengths and weaknesses of different options and decide the best course of action. Many of their decisions have a significant impact on operations or workers, such as deciding whether to hire an employee. You need to have Interpersonal skills. Human resources managers need strong interpersonal skills because they interact regularly with people. They often collaborate on teams and must develop positive working relationships with their colleagues. You should also have leadership skills. Human resources officers/managers must be able to direct a staff and oversee the operations of their department. They must coordinate work activities and ensure that workers in the department complete their duties and fulfil their responsibilities.

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?
To qualify for this program, you need to have (5) Ordinary levels credits or better the must has subjects include English language and mathematics. At any of the universities mentioned above Five “O” level credits including English Language or a Zambian language. Three “O” level credits with a Diploma in Human resource management from a tertiary institution recognized by the University is allowed to enter.
WHAT OTHER PROGRAMS OF STUDY CAN MAKE SOMEONE A HUMAN RESOURCE?
Human resources managers usually need a bachelor's or master’s degree. Candidates may earn a bachelor's degree in human resources or in another field, such as finance, business management, education, or information technology. Courses in subjects such as conflict management, Business administration and Labor relations or industrial psychology may be helpful. But typically a Zambian Human Recourse Manager needs to have a degree in Human Resource Management.
WHAT ARE THE FUTURE ADVANCED QUALIFICATIONS AVAILABLE AND WHY?
Once you study Human Resource, you may decide to pursue a master’s degree in Business and Human Resource Management, or Business Administration or labour relations or Public administration. A master’s degree gives you an upper hand when it comes to finding new jobs in competitive environments especially abroad. It’s a sign that apart from general skills, you have taken keen interest to master one area of your job more than other people. With a master’s degree one would become a university lecturer as well.
The reason you need to advance your qualifications is because, the workforce is becoming more diverse every day. Hence the need to advance your career for increased retention rate, a higher retention rate is beneficial to the organization because it reduces the cost of hiring.
Some organizations need a combination of education and several years of related work experience to become a human resources manager. Although a bachelor’s degree is sufficient for most positions, some jobs require a master’s degree. Candidates should have strong interpersonal skills. Some higher level jobs require a master's degree in human resources, labour relations, or business administration (MBA).
