PRIMARY EDUCATION-CAREER INFORMATION SUMMARY
WHAT IS PRIMARY EDUCATION AND WHO IS A PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHER?
Primary Education is an academic qualification which focuses on the primary education sector including academic literacy, educational psychology, research methodology, technology and teaching aids in education and more important lessons in the primary education sector. It comes in both Bachelor of Education in Primary Education and Diploma of Education with Primary Education.
A Primary school teacher is someone who has studied primary education at a college or university and graduated with a diploma or degree in primary education. A primary school teacher covers all class teacher roles across the early stages of school, you can teach from grade 1 up to grade 7. Usually assigned to one class, a Primary teacher will follow the curriculum and deliver lessons on a variety of subjects with a special focus on Literacy and Numeracy.
WHERE DO PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHERS WORK?
Primary school teachers can work for the government primary schools and private schools and the kind of work they do is all the same in all schools.
WHAT TASKS ARE INVOLVED IN THE WORK?
For all the primary teachers who work in government, private and missionary primary schools their tasks are all the same and they include: Organising the classroom displays and learning resources, Getting involved in whole school and extracurricular activities, providing feedback to parents and guardians on a pupil's progress at parents evenings and other meetings, Preparing and marking work to facilitate positive pupil development and Planning lessons on a variety of subjects related to the up-to-date curriculum.
WHAT IS THE WORK SCHEDULE OF A PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHER?
The work schedule or shifts of a primary school teacher in both the government schools and private schools differs in that, in government school primary school pupils have classes at different times, some classes start at 07hrs and end and 10rs the ones start from 10hrs and end at 13hrs and the last schedule is from 13hrs to 16hrs for lower grades of grade 1 to grade 4 and from grade 5 to grade 7 some classes start from 12rs to 17hrs. This means that government school teachers start and knock off at different hours.
For those in private schools, all classes start from 07hrs to 16hrs, this means that work schedule for private school teachers is from 07hrs to 16hrs from Monday to Friday and from 07hrs to 13hrs on Fridays.
WHAT DOES THE JOB MARKET LOOK LIKE?
The biggest employing sector for primary education graduates is the government. Every year the government through the ministry of education recruits close to 3000 teachers countrywide.
The second largest employing sector of primary education graduates is the private sector, every year and every month the private schools publish job adverts of primary school teachers. Unlike the government which employs once in a year through massive recruitment the private schools look for teachers every day of the week.
If you graduate with a degree you have chances of getting a job even outside the education sector where companies offer training on the job like in the banking sector.

WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS?
To qualify for this program you need to have (5) Ordinary levels including Mathematics and English. when enrolling for a degree, a Diploma in Primary Education is an added advantage and you can be excepted for one year and study for three years only.
WHAT OTHER PROGRAMS OF STUDY CAN MAKE SOMEONE A PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHER?
Alternatives that would enable one to work as a teacher include Early Childhood Education and Secondary Education. But typically a Zambian primary school teacher needs to have a diploma or degree in primary education.
WHAT ARE THE FUTURE ADVANCED QUALIFICATIONS AVAILABLE AND WHY?
Once you study a diploma in primary education, you may decide to pursue a degree in primary education or secondary education. In a case where you do a diploma in primary education, you will only do a degree in primary education only for three instead of four year.
After completing your pursuit of a degree in primary education you have chances of getting a job as a lecturer at a college. But these days a lot of people are graduating with degrees then you will have to pursue a masters with degree in education to become a lecturer.
The reason why you have to upgrade your qualification in primary education is to get promoted fast or to gain specialization by majoring in one particular course or subject i.e. becoming a mathematics teacher or study education management at either degree level or masters degree level depending on the . There is also an opportunity of changing your career from teaching upon upgrading your qualifications and studying other programs at a masters degree level like Masters degree in Marketing, Human Resources Management or Business administration.
